MENDOCINO THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS THE 2024 SEASON OPENER

-

Mendocino Theatre Company opens its 2024 Season with a production of The Children by acclaimed playwright Lucy Kirkwood. Ann Woodhead directs this thought-provoking play, featuring local favorite Pamela W. Allen and Northbay guest artists Tori Truss (director of 2023 Home, I'm Darling) and Charlie Herman. The creative team behind this production includes Set Design by Susan Larson, Lighting Design by Steve Greenwood, Sound Design by Ken Krauss, and Stage Management by Steven Jordan.

The captivating narrative of The Children delves into the lives of three retired nuclear engineers as they grapple with past decisions and confront the consequences of their actions. Set against an environmental tragedy, the play raises poignant questions about responsibility, legacy, and the impact of human choices on future generations.

Retired nuclear scientists Robin and Hazel are living in the aftermath of a power plant accident for which they bear some responsibility. Hazel (Allen) and her husband Robin (Herman), who have four grown children, live alone in an isolated coastal cottage. Their lifelong friend Rose (Truss), who is childless, arrives on the scene for an unexpected visit with a frightening request. The 90 minutes of poignant exchanges, unexpected twists, and profound revelations define this brilliant play as the trio grapples with the aftermath of their past choices and the implications of their actions on future generations. With Rose's surprise arrival, old memories resurface, relationships are tested, and truths are revealed. As these

three brilliant, often witty, and ultimately well-meaning characters navigate their complex dynamics and confront the moral dilemmas of their past, the play delves into themes of guilt, responsibility, sacrifice, and the intergenerational impact of decisions made in the face of environmental crisis. With wit, depth, and a touch of dark humor, Lucy Kirkwood's The Children challenges audiences to contemplate our choices, the legacies we leave behind, and the urgent need to address the consequences of our actions on the world and future generations.
