Focus on your game

Rack `em up:

I had no idea complaining about the overuse of powder around the new pool tables would create an uproar. Most people playing pool in Fort Bragg understand that using white powder carefully minimizes burying the pool table in dust. Everybody, it seems, dislikes the overuse of chalk. Most players are aware chalk dust slows a table. When playing a slow rolling shot, chalk buildup under the felt can be a reason for a ball to roll offline. Before playing, many players first brushed the pool table and felt free from white powder handprints and marks. When the game is over, you may need to brush the table again for the same reason: white powder handprints. Every brushing removes some felt from the table. Carbon fiber cue shafts do not need powder, and Pool gloves don't need powder. Pool players only need a small spot of powder on their thumb and a finger or two that will never reach the tabletop. They need to be more careful and precise when applying it to themselves. Clapping your hands to remove the excess indicates that you overuse it.

With new tables in Fort Bragg, regular players can't help being excited and looking out for them. I have been reminded several times to ask people to quit hitting tables with cue sticks. It's a bad habit that damages the brandnew cue sticks, and then you might find that you are the same as someone later complaining about the cue sticks being dented. Cue sticks start at $20.00 and can cost thousands of dollars; not everyone wants one. They rely on house sticks, and at Golden West Saloon, that means a new house stick. So, if you are guilty of doing so, quit whacking any pool table, anywhere, with a house stick or anything else, forever more.

Cue Tip: Was your accuracy affected if you listened to someone speak while shooting? I can't talk or listen while shooting and be nearly as accurate as when I can just focus on the shot. Some players talk constantly, whether standing and waiting or playing and shooting. I don't know how they managed to make a ball. But then, if I'm not thinking about it, I, too, may start talking while someone is trying to play their shot. If you focus on the game at hand, your accuracy may improve.
