Nedney misses another practice
CORTEZ REMAINS ON ROSTER; ARIZONA KICKER ALSO HURTING
Kicker Joe Nedney, hobbled by a groin injury, missed practice for a second day in succession Thursday and remained questionable for the 49ers’ game Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
Nedney, who missed the game at Tennessee last Sunday, might try to practice today, Coach Mike Nolan said.
‘‘He felt better, but we’ll see,’’ Nolan said. ‘‘Kicking the ball is a different thing.’’
The 49ers plan to keep Nedney’s replacement, Jose Cortez, on the roster for at least one more game, Nolan said. Cortez missed his only field-goal attempt, a 34-yarder, in the 33-22 loss to the Titans but handled kickoffs well and also converted an onside kick in the late going.
Nedney has been the 49ers’ topscoring threat this season. He has made 18 of 20 field-goal tries, including all seven from 40-49 yards. His five field goals accounted for all of the 49ers’ points in their last victory, 15-10 over Tampa Bay on Oct. 30.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are in the same situation as the 49ers were last week. Their kicker, Neil Rackers, injured his calf Thursday and was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.
‘‘We will bring in some kickers,’’ Cardinals Coach Dennis Green said. ‘‘We are in the process of contacting some guys.’’
In the teams’ first meeting Oct. 2, Rackers kicked six field goals in Arizona’s 31-14
“
victory in Mexico City.
With their practice field soaked by a driving rain, the 49ers cut their workout short Thursday.
‘‘We got most of the team drills in before it started raining too hard,’’ Nolan said. ‘‘Passing the ball was a little difficult.’’
The 49ers will make up the 30 minutes of lost practice time at today’s workout, Nolan said.
‘‘Basically, Friday duplicates Thursday’s practice anyway,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ll just double the reps up.’’
A week after suiting up but not playing, cornerback
Ahmed Plummer
was ruled out for
Sunday’s game after telling Nolan his
ankle injury was
bothering him
again.
Plummer, who
hasn’t played since
Week 3 against Dallas, has recovered
slowly from surgery
to remove a bone
chip in his left ankle.
Nolan expressed
puzzlement Thursday over the recurrence of the injury.
‘‘I don’t think he
hurt it in any way
on Sunday,’’ Nolan said. ‘‘I hope he didn’t, because he didn’t do anything. He went through warm-ups, although during the game he said he would have gone if I would have put him in. You think you’ve got questions. I’ve got questions, too, but I don’t have any answers to give you.’’
Nolan has denied that Plummer, a former firstround draft pick who received an $11 million bonus when he re-signed two years ago, is in his doghouse. But he also has said that he has no idea when or if Plummer will return this season.
