PALO ALTO — Two men were found dead Thursday at a grisly shooting scene at a Palo Alto apartment complex, police said.

About 3:20 p.m., Palo Alto police responded to the Alta Torre senior housing complex at 3895 Fabian Way for reports of a shooting, according to law enforcement officials.

When police arrived, they found two men dead inside a common area of the complex. A preliminary investigation suggested one of the deaths was the result of a suicide, officials said. The relationship between the men was not immediately known.

A gun was recovered at the scene. Police said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the residents’ deaths.

The complex is adjacent to the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center and has 56 one-bedroom apart- ments for very-low income seniors in Palo Alto, according to the property’s Web page. The complex was built in 2010, and 20 of the apartments are filled on a referral basis.

DJ Dull-MacKenzie of Redwood City was heading to the community center to pick up his daughter Callie from an after school program when he said he received three emails about the police activity.

“They assured us that everything was fine here at the center, that all the kids were fine, that there wouldn’t be any problems with pickup,” he said. “It gave us a little concern that something significant was going on, but we’d been assured that the kids were fine. Of course, that’s my main priority.”

Police remained at the scene for several hours investigating the incident.
