Thomas ninth 49er to suffer torn ACL

Former Stanford standout injures knee during workout

Linebacker Chase Thomas, a Stanford product who was twice promoted from the 49ers practice squad last season, tore ligaments in his right knee during a recent workout at Stanford, this newspaper learned Thursday.

It is not known if he will be available to the 49ers during the season.

Eight other 49ers are recovering from ACL tears: linebacker NaVorro Bowman, defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, running back Kendall Hunter, cornerback Keith Reaser, fullback Trey Millard, wide receiver Chuck Jacobs and guards Brandon Thomas and Fou Fonoti. All missed last season after tearing their ACLs.

The Cleveland Browns agreed to terms on a two-year contract with free agent wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, a person familiar with the negotiatio­ns told The Associated Press. Bowe, 30, spent the past eight seasons with Kansas City.

Tight end Jacob Tamme agreed to a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, becoming the sixth free agent to bolt Denver this offseason. The Falcons also signed tight end Tony Moeaki from Seattle.

The Miami Dolphins decided against matching the contract offer tight end Charles Clay received from Buffalo, so he will join the Bills after signing their $38 million, five-year deal Tuesday.

Washington re-signed free-agent quarterbac­k Colt McCoy, who started four games for the team last season.

Jacksonvil­le claimed running back Bernard Pierce off waivers, one day after his drunken driving charge led to his release by the Baltimore Ravens.

Tennis

Novak Djokovic made it to the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells when opponent Bernard Tomic withdrew because of a back injury.

Djokovic’s semifinal opponent Saturday will be fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who defeated No. 12 seed Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 for his 497th career victory, overtaking Tim Henman for the most by any Brit in the Open.

On the women’s side, Jelena Jankovic reached the semifinals when qualifier Lesia Tsurenko retired in the second set with a foot injury trailing 6-1, 4-1.

Jankovic will meet 24th-seeded Sabine Lisicki, who beat defending champion Fla- Andy Murray celebrates after defeating Feliciano Lopez at the BNP Paribas Open.

Baseball

Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt was struck in the jaw by a line drive and walked off with a bruise in Colorado’s 13-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. He was checked by a trainer before leaving the mound, and manager Walt Weiss said Betancourt passed concussion tests.

Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke’s 2016 option was exercised by the Brewers. Roenicke has led the Brewers to a 335-313 record in four seasons.

Little League pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis will be the subject of a Disney Channel biographic­al film, titled “Throw Like Mo.”

Miscellany

Lindsey Vonn claimed the season-long super-G title at the World Cup finals in Meribel, France. Vonn won the final super-G of the season and with it her 19th crystal globe trophy — equaling the record of Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark. She won the downhill title Wednesday, two years after a career-threatenin­g knee injury.

In the men’s super-G, Dustin Cook posted his first World Cup win. Kjetil Jansrud took second and gained some ground on Marcel Hirscher in the contest for the men’s overall title.

FIFA picked France over South Korea to host the Women’s World Cup in 2019.

A Formula One race in Germany this year looks increasing­ly unlikely as neither of the nation’s two circuits have been able to make a deal with series promoter Bernie Ecclestone. Staff writer Jon Wilner and The Associated Press contribute­d to this report.
