SERIES HISTORY: Boise State leads the series 11-0, as the schools are meeting for the first time in five years.

STORYLINES: The Spartans are one of 19 teams still playing for bowl eligibility. With the bloat of 40 bowls this season, San Jose State (5-6, 4-3, Mountain West) has a good chance at a postseason appearance by defeating the Broncos. Five teams with five victories are favored this weekend.… Boise State (7-4, 4-3) lost a chance to win the Mountain Division with its rare back-to-back home defeats the past two weeks. Before the latest downfall, the Broncos had lost only three times in Boise in 14 years. “This year, I don’t know if it is disappointing,” coach Bryan Harsin said.“The difference between 10-1 and 7-4 is minuscule.”

INJURY UPDATE: San Jose State— WR Tyler Winston (knee) and LB Jared Leaf (concussion) are out for the season. Boise State — WR Akilian Butler (collarbone), QB Ryan Finley (broken ankle), OT Rees Odhiambo (ankle) and S Dylan Sumner-Gardner (broken ankle) are out. TE David Lucero (arrested for attempted strangulation) is suspended indefinitely. S Darian Thompson (concussion) and WR Shane Williams-Rhodes (ankle) are back.

MATCHUPS TOWATCH: The game features the Mountain West’s top-ranked passing offense (Boise State) and No. 1 pass defense (San Jose State). Freshman QB Brett Rypien leads the conference in passing yards at 308.4 yards per game. (Colorado State’s Nick Stevens is second at 207.6). But San Jose State’s Kenny Potter is second in pass efficiency (144.4), while Rypien is fourth (136.7).

STATS THAT MATTER: Potter has either rushed or passed for eight touchdowns the past two games. It should have been nine, but he fumbled in the end zone against Nevada in a play that saw teammate Tim Crawley recover the ball for the score.… San Jose State has its most rushing touchdowns since 2004 with 23.… This is the fifth time since 1950 that a San Jose State teamhas rushed and thrown for more than 2,000 yards in a single season.… Boise State is ranked in the top 20 nationally both in total offense and total defense.… The Broncos are bowl eligible for the 18th consecutive season.… Boise State has committed 20 turnovers this season, tied for 93rd in the FBS. The Broncos have 15 turnovers in their four defeats, but none against Air Force last week.
