Penguins 3, Capitals 2: Pittsburgh raised the Stanley Cup championsh­ip banner then PhilKessel beat Braden Holtby in the fourth round of a shootout as the Penguins opened their title defense with a win.

Stars 4, Ducks 2: Antoine Roussel scored the tie-breaking goal for Dallas in the win. On Stars players’ helmets were decals representi­ng the badges of five officers slain in downtown Dallas this summer.

Blues 3, Wild 2: Nail Yakupov had a goal and an assist, and Jake Allen made several big saves for St. Louis.

Bruins 6, Blue Jackets 3: David Backes and Brad Marchand each scored twice, and Boston overcame a 2-0 firstperio­d deficit to beat Columbus. The Blue Jackets are trying to avoid last season’s disastrous start in which they lost the first eight games.

Lightning 6, Red Wings 4: Tyler Johnson scored a go-ahead power play goal off a nifty pass from Steven Stamkos midway through the third period, and Tampa Bay beat Detroit.

Canadiens 4, Sabres 1: Brendan Gallagher scored twice, including a tip-in on SheaWeber’s shot, in leading Montreal over Buffalo. Injuries continued to mount for the Sabres after Evander Kane was taken to the hospital for further evaluation after he slammed heavily into the end boards late in the second period. The Sabres were already playing without star center Jack Eichel, who is out with a sprained left ankle.

Rangers 5, Islanders 3: Chris Kreider scored the tiebreakin­g goal midway through the third period, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 shots to lift the Rangers over the Islanders. The Rangers opened a season at home for the first time since 2007.

Kings: Top goalie Jonathan Quick was placed on injured reserve after suffering an unspecifie­d lower-body injury in the first period of the season opener in SanJose on Wednesday. Quick was replaced by new backup Jeff Zatkoff for the final two periods of the Kings’loss.

Sabres: General manager Tim Murray signed a multiyear contract extension.
