“13th”: “Selma” director Ava DuVernay’s lightning bolt of a think piece revisits the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery, and then presents a damning case on how various horrifying actions, including the killing of African-Americans, and laws have hobbled its intentions. But in DuVernay’s competent hands, it becomes a detailed exploration of the racism that’s harbored in America’s soul. This passionate documentary tends to rely heavily on advocates, politicians and victims, all of whom thoughtfully relate their ideals and ordeals. That framing works, particularly when the words pair up with often disturbing historical and contemporary footage. “13th” is a conversation starter that should make us uncomfortable enough to rise up and demand change. “Transpecos”: In this tightly coiled neo-noir, a routine car search along the Texas-Mexico border takes a bad turn, shattering the ho-hum reality of three border patrol agents. Greg Kwedar’s feature-length debut is a slam dunk thriller that soaks in the whiskey-stained Texas atmosphere as the plot slithers and twists like an angry copperhead.
