CAL VS. OREGON

- — JEFF FARAUDO

RECORDS: Cal 3-3, 1-2 in Pac-12; Oregon 2-4, 0-3 in Pac-12. KICKOFF: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley (capacity 62,567). TV/RADIO: ESPN/810-AM. SERIES HISTORY: Cal leads 39-37-2. Oregon won 45-28 in Eugene last season and has won seven in a row in the series. STORYLINES: Can either of these defenses stop the other? Cal has allowed 40 points or more four times this season while Oregon has surrendered 162 points in the past three games … Cal tries to get its first win in four seasons under coach Sonny Dykes against Oregon, Stanford, USC or UCLA. The Bears are 0-12 in those games … Oregon is 27-4 in conference road games since the start of the 2009 season but one of those defeats was a 51-33 loss at Washington State on Oct. 1. Cal, meanwhile, has beaten Texas and Utah — both ranked in the top-25 at the time — in Berkeley this season and is 7-1 at home the past two seasons. CAL INJURY UPDATE: QB DavisWebb (thumb) will play; WR Chad Hansen (knee) is questionable; DT Luc Bequette (knee) is out.

STATS THAT MATTER: Cal ranks 127th out of 128 FBS teams in rushing defense, allowing 283.8 yards per game, and must take on an Oregon attack that has led the Pac-12 in rushing 10 straight seasons. Ducks RB Royce Freeman has run for 292 yards against Cal the past two seasons … Oregon has rushed for 1,005 yards against Cal the past three years.

CAL WINS IF: It can limit Oregon’s big plays. The Ducks average 36.8 points despite ranking last in the Pac-12 in time of possession. Translation: a lot of quick strikes. Cal has surrendered 85 plays of at least 10 yards, with 31 of those going 20 yards or more.

CAL LOSES IF: It can’t exploit the worst Oregon defense since … maybe ever. The Bears must not only re-ignite the Air Raid pass attack that floundered at Oregon State, they need to find success on the ground, where the Ducks are allowing 238 yards per game. Oregon has given up 35 touchdowns in six games, and the Bears need to bump that number up if they’re going to win this one.
