Stanford women 2nd in Pac-12 preseason poll

The Stanford women’s basketball team was picked to finish second and Cal sixth in the Pac-12 this season in a preseason media poll released Thursday.

The Cardinal received four of the 19 first-place votes to finish behind UCLA in the poll.

Cal’s Kristine Anigwe and Stanford’s Erica McCall were named to the preseason all-Pac-12 team. They were joined by UCLA’s Jordin Canada, Washington’s Kelsey Plum and Oregon State’s Sydney Wiese.

Grant Mullins and n Kameron Rooks scored 16 points apiece to lead the Cal men to an 81-73 victory over Cal Baptist in an exhibition game at Haas Pavilion.

Stephen Domingo scored seven of his 12 points during a 15-2 Cal run to open the game.

Women’s soccer

San Jose State’s bid to defend it Mountain West Tournament championsh­ip ended in a 2-0 loss to San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck.

The second-seeded Spartans beat the Aztecs 4-0 during the regular season, but in their tournament opener fell behind 2-0 in the first half and managed just one shot on goal.

The “Big Kick” will n have more than regional bragging rights on the line when No. 21 Cal plays host to No. 3 Stanford at 3 p.m. on Friday at Goldman Field.

The Cardinal (16-1-1, 9-1 Pac-12) can win its 11th Pac12 title and sixth championsh­ip in eight years with a win or clinch at least a share of the title with a tie. A win by Cal (13-4-2, 6-22) could open the door for USC or Colorado.

Women’s field hockey

Katie Keyser scored in the closing minutes to lift Stanford to a 3-2 victory over UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfin­als at the Pacific Field Hockey Turf in Stockton. The 13th ranked Cardi- nal will play the winner of Friday’s Cal-Maine game in the semifinals on Saturday.

Volleyball

Latahevai Lousi had 15 kills and Thaliana Grajeda had 10 kills on 14 attempts to lead San Jose State to a 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21) win over San Diego State.

Lousi also led the Spartans in blocking with a season-best seven total blocks – one solo block and a season-high six block assists.

Tennis

Cal’s Maegan Manasse posted a straight-set victory in main draw women’s singles and Karla Popovic won in three sets at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercolle­giate Championsh­ips at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

On the men’s side, Cal’s Florian Lakat posted a straight-set victory in his singles opener. Lakat and Filip Bergevi were seeded No. 1 in main draw doubles but lost 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(9).

Swimming

Cal men’s swimming associate head coach Yuri Suguiyama will serve as the head coach for the United States men at the FINA World Championsh­ips in Canada later this winter. The event, which is contested over a 25-meter format, will be held from Dec. 6-11 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It will be the 13th edition of the event.
