SAN JOSE STATE AT NO. 24 BOISE STATE

- — MARTIN GALLEGOS

RECORDS: SJSU 3-6, 2-3 Mountain West. Boise State 7-1, 3-1. KICKOFF: 7:15 p.m. Friday at Albertsons Stadium, Boise, Idaho. TV/RADIO: ESPN2, KLIV 1590.

SERIES HISTORY: San Jose State has yet to win a game against the Broncos, with an all-time record of 0-12. The teams first met in 1978, with Boise State winning 30-15. The Broncos have scored no fewer than 38 points in the six matchups played in Boise. The Spartans have been blown out for the most part in Boise, with the closest score in the series being a 38-21 final in 2005. This will be the seventh time SJSU will face a top-25 Boise State team. Boise defeated SJSU 40-23 last year in San Jose.

STORYLINES: Boise State is coming off a 30-28 loss at Wyoming. … After a 30-24 victory over UNLV on Saturday, San Jose State will look to put together consecutive victories for the first time this season.… SJSU’s last victory over a ranked team was 62-52 over No. 16 Fresno State in 2013. The last time the Spartans knocked off a ranked team on the road was in 1980, 30-22 over a No. 10 Baylor team that featured linebacker Mike Singletary.… The Spartans are looking to continue their turnover-free stretch. SJSU has gone three consecutive games without committing a turnover, a feat that has not been accomplished by a Spartans team since 1998.… San Jose State athletic director Gene Bleymaier held the same position at Boise State from 1982-2011.

SAN JOSE STATE WINS IF: The offense can carry over its success from last week’s first half. The Spartans defeated UNLV even though they were held to three points in the second half. Boise State is a much better team than UNLV, though its defense has shown that it can be scored on. The Broncos are giving up an average of just more than 20 points per game.

SAN JOSE STATE LOSES IF: The defense allows quarterback Brett Rypien to get comfortable. Part of the reason Wyoming was able to pull off the upset against the Broncos was its defense’s ability to put pressure on Rypien, sacking him three times and forcing an interception. SJSU probably can’t expect to hold Rypien to zero touchdown passes as Wyoming did, but it can make things interesting if the defense can apply pressure and force turnovers.
