Cal sets medley record
Bears 2nd overall at NCAAs after Day 2; Stanford sixth
Cal’s 400-yard medley relay team took second at the NCAA swimming and diving championships — but still set an American record — and the Bears were in second place overall after the second day of the fourday event in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Texas leads with 225.5 points, followed by Cal (143). Stanford (105) is sixth.
Ryan Murphy, Connor Hoppe, Matthew Josa and Michael Jensen’s finish of 3:01.51 bettered the American mark of 3:01.60 set by Cal at the 2015 NCAA meet. Texas broke the NCAA record, but one of its swimmers if foreign born.
Murphy also was third in the 200 IM and Cal’s 200 free relay team was third.
Stanford’s Grant Shoults re-set his own program record (4:10.23) in the finals off the 500 freestyle, earning his first career individual AllAmerica selection with first-team honors. Liam Egan (4:12.36) picked up his second consecutive All-America honor in the 500 free by winning the Bfinal for ninth place.
Tom Kremer (1:42.34) was second in the 200 IM B-final to earn the 19th AllAmerica honor in his Stanford career and the third of the meet.
Women’s soccer
Bay Area products Alex Morgan (Cal), Christen Press and Kelley O’Hara (Stanford), and current Cardinal goalie Jane Campbell were among the 24 players named to the U.S. women’s national team roster for a pair of friendlies against Russia next month.
Santa Clara product Julie Johnston was not available for these matches due to her wedding and honeymoon to former Stanford football player Zac Ertz.
Back on the team is Megan Rapinoe, who was not included on the team’s roster for the SheBelieves Cup tournament earlier this month. Also returning is forward Amy Rodriguez, who is coming back after the birth of her second child.
Fencing
Stanford’s Alexander Massialas earned the lead in men’s foil after three rounds of the National Collegiate Fencing Championships at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.
