Firefighters paid $300K have no right to complain

Re: “Rein in lackadaisical Bay Area fire officials” ( Editorial, June 6):

Thank you for bringing to our attention the lack of oversight in the local fire departments, especially Hayward’s.

It’s shocking that many fire departments in the South Bay are failing to adequately inspect schools and apartment buildings on an annual basis.

According to the Transparency California website, there are over a dozen fire fighters in Hayward drawing over $300,000 per year in total compensation. They have no right to complain about being inadequately resourced or unpaid. The taxpayers deserve better service for all the money they are putting into this department.

I hope the Mercury News continues to follow up on this story and hold these de- partments accountable. — Gena Lee- Cole, Sunnyvale
