Constitution designed to constrain self-pardoning

The Mercury News Weekend - - OPINION -

Our Founding Fathers knew their history, so they designed the U. S. Constitution to constrain leaders who felt they had divine rights putting them above the law and allowing them to do whatever they wanted.

Now President Trump, who swore to defend that Constitution, is asserting those very same divine rights that the collective wisdom of our founders tried to keep in check. Assertions like Trump’s historically have caused civil war, regicide and brutal military dictatorships. Trump wants to overturn our government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Let’s all be very aware that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. — Howard Thomas, Los Gatos
