Poor air causes Cal, USF to cancel games

Two men’s basketball games in the Bay Area were called off because of poor air quality from wildfires in Paradise.

Cal canceled its basketball game against Detroit Mercy on Thursday night because the Air Quality Index was well over the threshold of 200 — the very unhealthy range. A significan­t amount of smoke infiltrate­d Haas Pavilion leading to the cancellati­on.

USF postponed its game tonight against Arizona State because of unhealthy air quality as well. The schools are working on finding alternate plans for the game. NO. 7 STANFORD 96, USF 62 » Kiana Williams scored 11 of her 21 points in the third quarter, and the host Cardinal (3-0) routed the Dons, who are led by third-year head coach Molly Goodenbour and assistant Katy Steding. Both were part of past Stanford national championsh­ip teams.

Alanna Smith scored nine of her 18 points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter for the Cardinal. Stanford made 15 3-pointers on the heels of a record matching 16 in a victory over Idaho on Sunday.
