Chung charged with cocaine possession

-

New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung has been indicted in New Hampshire on a charge of cocaine possession, according to court paperwork released Thursday.

A Belknap County grand jury indicted Chung, 32, on Aug. 8.

Members of the Meredith, New Hampshire, police department were called to Chung’s residence June 25 “on a call for service” and obtained evidence leading to the felony drug charge, Belknap County Attorney Andrew Livernois said in a statement.

Livernois declined to provide additional details on the case.

Chung’s arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.

It is not clear whether Chung has an attorney who can speak for him. The court file doesn’t list one.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Patrick Chung,” the Patriots tweeted. “We will not be commenting while his judicial proceedings take place.”

The team also didn’t say whether Chung would play Thursday night at a preseason home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Chung has been an integral part of the Patriots’ defense during his two stints with the team. New England drafted him in the second round in 2009. He left in free agency in 2012 and signed with the Eagles.

He spent one year in Philadelphia and returned to New England in 2014. He won Super Bowl rings with the Patriots to conclude the 2014, 2016 and 2018 seasons. PANTHERS QB NEWTON LEAVES WITH INJURY » Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton left Thursday night’s exhibition game against New England in the first quarter with a foot injury and did not return.

The 2015 NFL MVP was playing for the first time since Dec. 17, when the team shut him down for the last two games of the season because of shoulder fatigue that prevented him from throwing the ball downfield. He had arthroscopic surgery in January and did not play in the first two preseason games.

Newton appeared to be injured when he was sacked for a loss of 8 yards by Adam Butler on a third- and-10 from the Carolina 31. It was one of two sacks while Newton was in the game.

Kyle Allen took over at quarterback in the second quarter for the Panthers. CARDINALS-EAGLES TRADE » The Arizona Cardinals acquired defensive lineman Bruce Hector in a trade that sent safety Rudy Ford to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The move is pending physicals for both players.

The 24-year- old Hector adds depth for the Cardinals on the defensive line. The 6-foot-2, 296-pounder played in eight games for the Eagles last season and had three tackles and a half sack.

The 5-11, 204-pound Ford has played the past two seasons for the Cardinals, mostly on special teams. JONES ANSWERS CRITIC WITH ENCOURAGING EFFORT FOR GIANTS » Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones completed a difficult week with an encouraging performance, leading the New York Giants to a touchdown during a 25-23 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Zac Taylor’s first home game as head coach.

In a GQ article published Tuesday, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said he was stunned that the Giants drafted the quarterback from Duke in the first round. Mayfield tried to play down the comment and texted Jones to explain his remarks.

Jones got into the game on the Giants’ second series and went 9 of 11 for 141 yards the rest of the half. He had completions of 35 yards to Brittan Golden and 27 yards to Darius Slayton on a seven-play touchdown drive, a solid all- around showing for Eli Manning’s eventual replacement.

Golden added a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Giants pulled away.

The Bengals distributed 34,887 tickets for the game, fewer than for the first home preseason game last year. They had the secondlowest home attendance in the league last season, part of the impetus to fire Marvin Lewis and bring in Taylor to try to stir fan interest.

The Bengals’ new offense under Taylor has struggled to find consistency. Andy Dalton played three series that ended with a couple of punts and a touchdown. SHERMAN JOINS STEELERS STAFF » The Pittsburgh Steelers are turning to Ray Sherman to serve as the club’s interim wide receivers coach following the death of Darryl Drake.

This is Sherman’s second stint with the Steelers. He served as the team’s offensive coordinator in 1998 under former head coach Bill Cowher. The 67-year-old Sherman has made 10 coaching stops in the NFL during his lengthy career, last serving as wide receivers coach for the Rams from 2012-15. INMAN RETURNS TO CHARGERS » Wide receiver Dontrelle Inman is returning to the Los Angeles Chargers. Inman played 41 games for the team from 2014 to ‘17. He played for Indianapolis last season.
