SAN JOSE » Barry’s Bootcamp, a boutique fitness center with a personalized approach, is preparing to open its doors in San Jose’s bustling Santana Row complex.

“We think that Barry’s will be a great fit for Santana Row,” said Adam Shane, managing partner with Los Angeles- based Barry’s Bootcamp. “There’s a lot happening at Santana Row that lends itself to the convenience of getting your workout in.”

Santana Row is considered a destination for people who want to live, work, and play in the same center. With restaurants, shops, hotel rooms, residences and office buildings, Santana Row offers the potential for all those activities, and that fits what Barry’s Bootcamp is seeking.

The fitness center aims to give people a way to work off pounds or torch carbs after dining or shopping. Or to get in that workout before a visit to the restaurant or store.... Or before or after work... Or before heading home.

“There is a lot of co-tenancy at Santana Row that makes the location a natural for us,” Shane said.

Barry’s will open in a 4,500-square-foot space on the ground floor of 700 Santana Row.

The fitness studio will contain 21 treadmills, roughly 25 floor spaces and offer enough room for about 46 participants at a time.

“We are at the bottom floor of a large office building, so you have a daytime population,” Shane said. “The people who eat and shop at Santana Row may visit us. You have the people who live there. It’s a great tenant mix.”

Barry’s Bootcamp will have some competition from SoulCycle, which offers indoor cycling workouts.

The latest Barry’s gear will be available for purchase in the studio’s lobby, featuring tank tops, hats, shorts, leggings, tights and exclusive items from fitness brands such as Nike and Lululemon. Barry’s Fuel Bar will offer snacks, smoothies and post-workout protein shakes.

The Santana Row location will be the seventh Barry’s Bootcamp in the Bay Area. The company already operates fitness clubs in Palo Alto, Burlingame, and four in San Francisco.

The new Barry’s Bootcamp is opening at a time when the fitness industry is in growth mode, according to statistics compiled by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

The worldwide health club industry generated $94 billion in revenue during 2018, which was up 7.9% from the $87.2 billion the sector produced in 2017, the IHRSA reported.

More than 210,000 clubs served 183 million members in 2018, compared with 201,000 clubs serving 174 million members during 2017, the IHRSA reported.

“Steady growth was recorded in 2018 in key markets around the globe,” Kristen Walsh, associate publisher with IHRSA, said in a post on the health club association’s web site. “The industry is on pace to reach its goal of 230 million health club members worldwide by 2030.”

Barry’s Bootcamp classes provide the opportunity for a portion of the class participants to engage in treadmill activity and part of the class to focus on strength training. During a 50-minute class, people will have the opportunity to switch from one mode to the other multiple times.

“We like to call it personalized training in a group setting,” Shane said.
