Alameda's Whorley, Serra's Rodriguez win AOW honors

Alameda softball player Jasmine Whorley is the Bay Area News Group's girls athlete of the week and Serra baseball player Josiah Rodriguez is the boys athlete of the week for March 27-April 1.

In the girls poll, Whorley received 16,357 votes (46.04%), finishing ahead of Saratoga softball player Lily Guzman's 11,290 votes (31.78%). Willow Glen softball player Alanna Clincy finished third.

Whorley, a junior, led Alameda to two victories last week, striking out 16 opponents across 12 innings of work on the mound against Arroyo and Encinal. Whorley also had four hits and scored a run for the 6-3 Hornets.

In the boys poll, Rodriguez received 26,460 votes (56.58%), finishing ahead of Bellarmine swimming and diving athlete Jack Clark's 16,592 votes (35.48%). Los Altos track and field athlete Zachary Fagin finished third.

Rodriguez, a junior, slugged a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift Serra to a 7-4 victory over St. Francis in West Catholic Athletic League play. Finished the game with four RBIs. Also knocked in four runs in a rout of Archbishop Riordan earlier in the week.
