Foley, Zhang are BANG's boys, girls athletes of the week

Amador Valley baseball player Matthew Foley is the Bay Area News Group's boys athlete of the week and Saratoga swimmer Kelsey Zhang is the girls athlete of the week for May 1-6.

In the boys poll, Foley received 9,802 votes (40.03%), finishing ahead of Branham baseball player Evan Williams' 7,432 votes (30.35%). Woodside baseball player Harry Pelzman placed third.

Foley, a junior, pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk as Amador defeated Pleasanton rival Foothill 3-0 in an East Bay Athletic League game. Foley is 6-0 with a 0.74 ERA this season for a team that began this week 18-4.

In the girls poll, Zhang received 26,265 votes (35.92%), finishing ahead of Valley Christian softball player Mia Iacomini's 20,547 votes (28.10%). James Logan track and field athlete Michaelah Mendoza placed third.

Zhang, a freshman, placed first at the CCS championsh­ips in the 200 IM with a time of one minute and 59.03 seconds, and in the 100 butterfly by swimming it in 52.62 seconds. A few weeks earlier, Zhang had won the SCVAL-De Anza division championsh­ips in the 500 free and the 100 back.
