Stanford men upended by Belmont
Cardinal women cruise to another victory in Hawaii
Horrific long- range shooting and the loss of leading scorer Dwight Powell to fouls early in the second half Sunday night doomed Stanford in a 70- 62 defeat to mid- major Belmont University in a nonconference game at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford made 2 of 19 from 3- point range and shot only 31 percent overall in fumbling away the game after erasing a 14- point defi - cit in front of an announced crowd of 4,365. The Cardinal went on a 22- 7 run to take a 49- 48 lead with 7: 48 left.
But undersized Belmont held on to snap Stanford’s eight- game win streak dating to last season that was the longest in the country.
“There was a lot of miscommunication,” said junior forward Josh Huestis, who had career highs of 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots. “Guys were running around and didn’t know their assignments.”
Freshman guard Christian Sanders scored 11 points and center Stefan Nastic had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead Stanford ( 3- 1).
Sophomore guard Chasson Randle scored 10 points but made only 1 of 11 field goals. Fellow starting guard Aaron Bright hit only 1 of 10 shots.
Ian Clark had 15 points and Kerron Johnson added 14 for the Bruins ( 3- 0), an Ohio Valley Conference school from Nashville, Tenn. Belmont has made five NCAA tournament appearances since 2006, and the Bruins counted on their experience in the final minutes.
Powell ( 15.7 points per and 9.7 rebounds per game) fouled out with 16: 39 left after getting called twice within 12 seconds.
“We need to be a lot more focused,” Nastic said. “Some of the mistakes we normally don’t make. That was surprising.”
Saint Mary’s 85, Eastern Washington 66: Brad Waldow and Stephen Holt scored 16 points each to lead the Gaels ( 3- 0) past the Eagles ( 0- 3) in Moraga. Matthew Dellavedova added nine points, eight assists and six rebounds for Saint Mary’s.
Ohio State 77, Washington 66: Deshaun Thomas scored 21 of his 31 points in the first half, and the No. 4 Buckeyes ( 3- 0) held off the Huskies ( 2- 2) in the final of the Hall of Fame Tip- Off tournament in Uncasville, Conn.
Oklahoma State 76, North Carolina State 56: Le’Bryan Nash scored 23 points to spark the Cowboys ( 4- 0) past the No. 6 Wolfpack ( 31) in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
