Jake Shaughnessy has been named the football coach at Leland High, athletic director Mike Sparrer said Tuesday.

Shaughnessy, the son of longtime East Bay coach Dan Shaughnessy, has coached at Leland as an assistant since 2009. He has nearly 20 years of coaching experience at the high school and college level, including at Cal and Menlo College.

“Leland High School has built a reputation of being one of the most competitive public schools in the Central Coast Section, and we believe Coach Shaughnessy will continue to direct the program down that path,” Sparrer said in an email.

“His knowledge of the game, enthusiasm for coaching, and his experience are just some of the qualities that made Coach Shaughnessy the right fit for our football program.”

Shaughnessy takes over for Mike Carrozzo, who stepped down at the end of the season.

Oak Grove defensive back Chidobe Awuzie said in a text message that he will announce his college destination at a school ceremony Wednesday.

His finalists are Colorado, San Jose State and Washington State.

Eastside Prep took a big step toward its first outright West Bay Athletic League title Tuesday with a 47- 34 win over visiting Pinewood. Eastside and Pinewood went into the game tied for first in the WBAL Foothill Division. Eastside has one regular- season league game left, Friday against last- place Castilleja.

“( Two years ago) we tied for first, but we don’t put up banners for co- championships here,’’ Eastside coach Donovan Blythe said.

Eastside ( 17- 5, 8- 1) limited Pinewood to 25 percent shooting ( 11 of 44). Pinewood managed only three points in the fourth quarter when it needed a flurry to stage a comeback.

“They get after it,’’ Pinewood coach Doc Scheppler said of Eastside. “There are three things that go into playing great defense: principles, effort and athleticism. Eastside has good principles. They give great effort and have great athleticism. They’re a great defensive team. We had to earn everything we got.’’

Hashima Carothers, Eastside’s one senior, scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Point guard Charmaine Bradford scored 14.

“She hasn’t tapped her full potential yet,’’ Blythe said of the USF- bound Carothers. “Once she does that she’s going to be scary at the college level.’’

Winning league is the first in a series of goals for the Panthers. Last year they won the Central Coast Section Division V championship, then won two games in the Northern California playoffs before losing to Brookside Christian in the NorCal Division V final.

“Our goal is to get back there and go beyond that,’’ Blythe said.

To the school’s first state final appearance.

“That’s why we wake up at 6 in the morning to practice,’’ Carothers said.

Pinewood ( 18- 5, 7- 2) led 5- 2 at the game’s outset. Eastside went on an 8- 0 run and never trailed again. Angelina Mapa led Pinewood with 13 points.

Menlo School 53, Mercy- San Francisco 48: Drew Edelman had 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead Menlo ( 16- 7, 6- 3). The Knights host Pinewood on Friday.
