SAN JOSE — The Frys. com Open is teeing itself up after this year and driving north — at least temporarily.

The annual PGA Tour event has been played at CordeValle Resort in San Martin south of San Jose since 2010 when sponsor Fry’s Electronics moved the tournament to the Bay Area from Arizona. But officials said Wednesday that following the 2013 tournament from Oct. 10- 13, the event will switch to the Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa. The contract with Silverado calls for the Frys. com Open to be played there in 2014 with an option to return in 2015 and 2016.

Frys. com Open officials say they are moving the tournament, which has featured such top competitors as Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, because a four- year contract with CordeValle is expiring after this year.

Plans originally called for the 2014 Frys. com Open to be played at The Institute, a private course east of Morgan Hill built by Fry’s Electronics’ John Fry.

But construction delays regarding The Institute clubhouse, complicated by a PG& E pipeline that runs through the property, have forced an alternate solution.

Silverado proprietors were interested in showcasing their property after recently completing a golf course revamping supervised by former PGA Tour pro Johnny Miller.

Silverado has previously hosted PGA and Senior PGA events.

Jeff Sanchez, the Frys. com tournament director, said the event’s ultimate destination is still The Institute, whenever the clubhouse can be completed.

CordeValle, meanwhile, will stay busy by playing host to the 2013 Senior Women’s Amateur, 2015 PGA Cup and 2016 U. S. Women’s Open.
