Gordon helps U. S. remain unbeaten

Americans top Serbia at under- 19 championsh­ips

Arizona- bound Aaron Gordon of San Jose had 11 points and nine rebounds as Team USA beat Serbia 7162 in a battle of unbeatens at the FIBA under- 19 world championsh­ips Wednesday in Prague, Czech Republic.

The U. S. ( 6- 0) will face Canada in Friday’s quarterfin­als.

Saint Mary’s signee Dane Pineau had 16 points and six rebounds in Australia’s 78- 61 win over Russia. The Aussies will play Spain in the quarterfin­als.

Cal League

Devin Harris hit his 18th homer of the season — a three- run shot in a four- run fourth inning— and the San Jose Giants held on for a 7- 6 win at Modesto. Mac Williamson hit a solo homer — his 14th — in the sixth for a 6- 3 lead. Giants starter Kyle Crick ( 1- 1, 1.46 ERA) allowed three earned runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out 10.

Colleges

Stanford’s Mark Appel ( baseball) and Becky Dru ( field hockey) and Cal’s Tom Shields ( swimming) and Layshia Clarendon ( basketball) were named the 2012- 13 Pac- 12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners for their achievemen­ts in scholarshi­p, athletics and leadership.

Also honored among the top senior athletes in the conference was Oregon football player Michael Clay ( Bellarmine Prep High).

Track and field

Former Cal star David Torrence ran the fastest 1,500- meter time by an American this year at a meet in Tomblaine, France. He clocked 3 minutes, 34.19 seconds to finish third.
