State 73: Joseph Young scored 27 points, Elgin Cook added 18, and the eighth-seeded Ducks beat the ninth-seeded Cowboys. Dana Altman got the win in his return to Omaha and the same building where he once coached Creighton. Young, the Pac-12 player of the year, was 8 of 15 from the floor, hit three long 3-pointers and was perfect from the foul line.
Wisconsin 86, Coastal Carolina 72: Big Ten player of the year Frank Kaminsky had 27 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, and the top-seeded Badgers beat the No. 16 seed Chanticleers.
Midwest Regional
Wichita State 81, Indiana 76: Fred VanVleet matched his career high with 27 points, Ron Baker made big free throws late, and the seventh-seeded Shockers defeated the No. 10 seed Hoosiers.
West Virginia 68, Buffalo
62: Tarik Phillip hit a 3pointer with 28 seconds left while the shot clock was winding down, adding the clinching points as the fifth-seeded Mountaineers held off the 12th-seeded Bulls.
Kansas 75, New Mexico State 56: Frank Mason III scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack, and the second-seeded Jayhawks rolled over the No. 15 seed Aggies, giving the beleaguered Big 12 its first tournament win after it went 0-3 on Thursday.
Maryland 65, Valparaiso
62: DezWells converted an offensive rebound into a three-point play with 1:44 left, and Varun Ram stripped away Valparaiso’s last chance as the fourthseeded Terrapins held off the No. 13 seed Crusaders. Valparaiso was down 3 with one last chance when Keith Carter went up for a 3-pointer in the corner, but Ramreached in and swiped the ball away— maybe getting some of Carter’s arm in the process.

Duke 85, Robert Morris
56: Quinn Cook scored 22 points to help the topseeded Blue Devils get off to a torrid start and rout the No. 16 seed Colonials. Freshman Jahlil Okafor added 21 as the Blue Devils hit their first seven shots and 12 of 15 to quickly build a big lead. Iowa 83, Davidson 52: Aaron White scored 13 straight points as part of Iowa’s 18-3 run early in the second half, and the seventh-seeded Hawkeyes rolled over the No. 10 seed Wildcats. White finished with 26 points as Iowa won its first NCAA tournament game since 2001. Gonzaga 86, North Dakota State 76: Kyle Wiltjer scored 23 points to lift the second-seeded Bulldogs over the 15thseeded Bison. The Zags will play Iowa on Sunday to try to make the second weekend of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. San Diego State 76, St. John’s 64: JJ O’Brien scored 18 points, Dwayne Polee II added 15 points on five 3-pointers, and the eighth-seeded Aztecs defeated the ninth-seeded Red Storm. East Regional Louisville 57, UC Irvine 55: Freshman Quentin Snider hit the winning free throws and Terry Rozier made the saving steal to help the fourth-seeded Cardinals top the 13thseeded Anteaters and send the tournament’s tallest player packing. Mamadou Ndiaye, the 7-foot-6 center, finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Michigan State 70, Georgia 63: Denzel Valentine scored 16 points and went 6 for 6 at the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to help the seventh-seeded Spartans hold off the 10th-seeded Bulldogs. Virginia 79, Belmont 67: Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points and Justin Anderson re-emerged as a scoring threat for the second-seeded Cavaliers in a win over the No. 15 seed Bruins. Anderson had 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Anderson, playing with his broken left pinkie taped to his ring finger, scored for the first time since Feb. 7 against Louisville. He failed to score in two ACC tournament games.
Northern Iowa 71, Wyoming 54: Paul Jesperson led five Northern Iowa players in double figures with 16 points and Sean Tuttle added 14 as the fifth-seeded Panthers beat the 12th-seeded Cowboys.
Oklahoma 69, Albany 60: TaShawn Thomas powered his way to 18 points inside and versatile Buddy Hield added 15 as the thirdseeded Sooners, who suffered first-game exits the previous two seasons, advanced by beating the No. 14 seed Great Danes. Dayton 66, Providence 53: Dyshawn Pierre scored 20 points, and the 11thseeded Flyers rode a loud home-crowd advantage in Columbus, Ohio, to another tournament win, beating the No. 6 seed Friars.
