Cal loses two hoop recruits

But Bears do add another player to join Rabb, Brown

Four-star Cal basketball signee Tyson Jolly of Oklahoma City will not play for the Bears this season, the school announced Wednesday. Jolly is expected to attend a prep school.

Wing Davon Dillard, who had committed to Cal but had yet to get NCAA clearance, de-committed and has chosen Oklahoma State, according to multiple media sources.

Cal got an oral commitment from Roman Davis, a 6-foot-7 forward from Windward High in Los Angeles, according to Rivals, which ranks him as a three-star prospect. He joins a recruiting class that includes top-10 signees Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown.

SaberCats

The SaberCats announced that they have been assigned wide receiver Maurice Purify. Purify spent the past three seasons with the Arizona Rattlers, winning the ArenaBowl championsh­ip each season, recording an Arena League record seven touchdowns in the 2012 ArenaBowl. In 2011, Purify was named AFL Rookie of the Year as a member of the Georgia Force, where he hauled in 130 receptions for 1653 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Top Mexican teams Club Atlas of Guadalajar­a and Leon will meet in a preseason game at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Avaya Stadium. The event is part of a three-match series that includes games in Fresno and Sacramento featuring the popular Chivas of Guadalajar­a.

Atlas is coming off a defeat to rival Chivas in quarterfin­als of the Liga MX Clausura playoffs.

Meagan Schmitt, a former player for the Bears, has been named head coach of the school’s beach volleyball program, Cal athletic director Mike Williams announced. Schmitt spent the past season as Cal’s associate head coach. Previously, she was an assistant coach for Loyola Marymount’s beach and indoor volleyball programs for three years.

Bay Area table tennis n stars Kanak Jha, Lily Zhang and Jiaqui Zheng will compete in the U.S. Open, July 6-11, in Las Vegas. The teens are among 1,000 competitor­s from 33 countries.

San Jose Giants

Host Stockton scored in the first five innings to hand the Giants (32-44) a 6-3 defeat. The Giants’ Christian Arroyo was 2 for 3, including his third home run.
