SaberCats’ Gray named All-Arena

Two teammates earn second-team All-Arena honors

Three members of the San Jose SaberCats’ topseeded Arena League playoff team earned All-Arena offense honors, the league announced Wednesday. Wide receiver Reggie Gray was named to the firstteam after leading the AFL in total touchdowns (47) and receptions (162).

Offensive lineman Rich Ranglin earned second-team honors, hauling in a career-high six touchdown receptions this season. Quarterbac­k Erik Meyer also earned second-team honors after throwing for 4,057 yards and 93 touchdowns with just six intercepti­ons this season.

The SaberCats will face second-seeded Arizona for the National Conference championsh­ip on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Arena Bowl. The conference championsh­ip will be played at the Stockton Arena (5 p.m.) because of a scheduling conflict at the SAP Center.

Horse racing

Golden Gate Fields will offer eight races when it opens its summer meet on Friday. Post time for Friday’s first race is 3:45 p.m. The meet runs until Labor Day, then racing resumes at GGF on Sept. 24.

Babe Ruth baseball

Tri-Valley from the Danville area managed 13 hits and beat Western New York 15-5 in the 13year-old World Series in Jamestown, New York. Tri-Valley scored six runs in the third to recover from a 4-0 deficit. Beau Garratt and Trevor Jackson had two RBIs apiece in the big inning. Tri-Valley added four in the fifth in the game shortened to six innings.

Weather halted play in the sixth inning of Tri-Valley’s final pool play game of the 14-year-old World Series, with Tri-Valley from the Dublin area leading Bryant, Arkansas, 7-1, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The suspended game is scheduled to resume Thursday morning.

San Jose Giants

Jason Forjet (5-4) allowed three hits over six innings to lead the Giants to a 3-1 win over the Stockton Ports. Jake Smith (12 saves) struck out three batters in the ninth to escape a jam as the Ports got the potential tying runs on base. Daniel Carbonell, Angel Villalona and Ryder Jones drove in the runs for the Giants (61-61).
