“She’s Funny That Way” (Unrated): Peter Bogdanovich directs Jennifer Aniston, Imogen Poots, OwenWilson and others in a star-studded cast in a story about a married Broadway director (Wilson) who falls for a prostitute-turnedactress (Poots) and decides to help advance her career. “Hitman: Agent 47” (R): A genetically engineered assassin, known only by the last two numbers of the bar code on his neck, goes after a huge corporation that wants to unlock his secrets to create an army of killers. Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware and Zachary Quinto star. “Sinister 2” (R): In this sequel to the surprisehit horror movie, a protective mom (Shannyn Sossamon) and her twin boys find themselves in a rural house occupied by a particularly nasty pagan deity. “American Ultra” (R): Jesse Eisenberg plays unmotivated stonerdude Mike, whose life is turned inside out when he discovers he has lethal skills as a trained sleeper agent. Kristen Stewart and Topher Grace also star. “Digging for Fire” (R): A husband and wife (Jake Johnson and Rosemarie DeWitt) staying in a fancy Hollywood Hills house discover a bone and a gun, which sends each on separate adventures over the course of one weekend. The comedy also stars Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell. “Phoenix” (PG-13): Nelly (Nina Hoss), a Jewish- German concentration camp survivor and nightclub singer, had her face was reconstructed after she was shot. She keeps her identity secret even from her husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), as she seeks to solve a disturbing mystery. (Opens in San Jose, Berkeley and S.F.)
“Mistress America” (R): Bored college freshman Tracy (Lola Kirke) finds her life gaining excitement when she is taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig), a New York City gal about town. (Opens in San Francisco). “Meru” (R): This documentary tells the story of a group of climbers in 2008 trying to conquer one of the sport’s ultimate prizes: Mount Meru in northern India, which sits 21,000 feet above the Ganges River.
