Cal loses in finale of Australian tour

Bears finish 3- 1 after foul- plagued loss in overtime

The Cal men’s basketball team rallied from 17 points down but lost 110- 99 in overtime to a veteran Illawarra Hawks profession­al team in the finale of the Bears’ four- game Australian tour Friday.

The Bears, who won their first three games Down Under, were led by 24 points from junior guard Jordan Mathews. Freshman Jaylen Brown added 19 points, Jabari Bird had 17, Tyrone Wallace had 14 points and six assists, and freshman Ivan Rabb had his third double- double of the trip with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Cal was whistled for 40 personal fouls, which allowed the Hawks to shoot 55 free throws and outscore the Bears 40- 19 at the free- throw line.

Volleyball

Former Archbishop Mitty and Stanford star Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner April Ross reached the quarterfin­als of the World Series of Beach Volleyball Olympic qualifying tournament in Long Beach with a 21- 13, 21- 16 victory over Switzerlan­d’s Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge- Depre . The eighth- ranked Americans will face No. 4 Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan of Canada on Saturday. The winner will advance to the semifinals Saturday afternoon.

Women’s soccer

San Jose State got goals from Samantha Orodpour, Darlene Rodriguez and Claire Berkley to beat Lamar 3- 0 in opener for both teams in Beaumont, Texas. … Freshmen Grace Cutler and Janae Gonzalez each scored as Santa Clara beat UC Davis 2- 0 in the season opener. … No. 18 Cal lost its season opener 2- 0 to No. 19 BYU at the Outrigger Resorts Classic in Honolulu. … Hannah Diaz and Samantha Dion scored first- half goals as host Saint Mary’s opened its season with a 2- 0 win over UC Santa Barbara.

San Jose Giants

Ryder Jones tripled, doubled, scored two runs and drove in one, but San Jose lost 5- 3 to Bakersfiel­d in a California League game at Municipal Stadium.

Youth baseball

Beau Garratt pitched a four- hitter and Asher Golden and Jack Grant had RBI doubles in TriValley’s 5- 1 win over Midwest Plains in the 13- Year Old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, New York. Tri- Valley faces New England for the title Saturday.

The Tri- Valley 14year- olds beat previously undefeated Southeast 5- 3 to advance to the championsh­ip game in the Babe Ruth World Series in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Tri- Valley faces undefeated Middle Atlantic for the title Saturday. Earlier Friday, TriValley beat Midwest Plains 6- 0.
