Tennis players France bound
Cal’s Manasse, Stanford’s Fawcett in international event
Cal tennis player Maegan Manasse and coach Amanda Augustus will represent the United States in the 10th annual Master’U BNP Paribas international collegiate tournament Dec. 4-6 in Rennes, France.
Stanford player Tom Fawcett also was selected to participate in the eightteam event at the Tennis Club Saint-Grégoire indoor courts.
This marks the first selection to the event for Manasse, who is ranked fourth in the ITA preseason singles poll. Augustus has been a part of the U.S. coaching staff the past three tournaments. The Americans defeated host France 4-1 in last year’s final.
Besides the United States and France, the other teams participating are Belgium, China, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Russia.
The tournament consists of two women’s singles matches, two men’s singles matches, one women’s doubles match and one men’s doubles match. If the standings are tied after those six matches, a mixed doubles match will break the tie.
Soccer
Stanford’s Jeremy Gunn and Paul Ratcliffe and USF’s Jim Millinder were named regional coaches of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Gunn has led the Cardinal men to the NCAA quarterfinals this weekend. Ratcliffe’s women fell to Duke in a penalty shootout in the final eight. Millinder’s Dons (13-4-3) finished tied for second in the West Coast Conference.
Football
Jared Goff was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks for his record-setting performance in Cal’s 48-46 comeback victory over Arizona State on Saturday. Goff broke his own school record with 542 passing yards and threw for five touchdowns.
Women’s basketball
Santa Clara’s Morgan McGwire was named the West Coast Conference co-Player of the Week. She averaged 16.3 points per game to lead the Broncos to three wins, including an upset at No. 13 Stanford.
Stanford’s Lili n Thompson was named Pac-12 Player of the Week. In four games, she averaged 20.8 points, 6.0 assists and 1.8 steals.
Volleyball
Stanford (22-6) earned the No. 8 overall seed in the NCAA championships and was selected to host the first and second rounds. The Cardinal will play New Mexico (28-5) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Santa Clara (22-8) also was selected and will face Michigan on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Los Angeles.
San Jose State’s Tyanna n Roy received honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference honors.
Field hockey
Stanford’s Maddie Secco and Sarah Helgeson were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association AllWest Region first team. Cal’s Clara Goni was selected to the second team.
