Ipsen on verge of Olympic spot

Wales tops group at Euro 2016; England also advances

Bay Area product Kristian Ipsen (Stanford, De La Salle High) passed Michael Hixon on his last semifinal dive to take the lead in the men’s 3-meter competitio­n at the U.S. Olympic diving trials in Indianapol­is. Four-time Olympian Troy Dumais is fourth as he tries to make his fifth Olympic team.

Jessica Parratto took the women’s 10-meter to take the lead over Samantha Bromberg.

Finals of both events will be held Saturday. The top two finishers in each event will qualify for the American team bound for Rio.

Soccer

Wales qualified for the knockout stages of the European Championsh­ip as a group winner after it overwhelme­d Russia 3-0 on Monday, and England could only grind out a 0-0 draw with Slovakia.

In its first internatio­nal tournament since the 1958 World Cup, Wales ended Group B with six points, one ahead of England, which also qualifies for the round of 16. With four points on the board, Slovakia still has a chance to make it to the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Hockey

The Anaheim Ducks broke up their successful goaltendin­g tandem Monday, trading Frederik Andersen to the Toronto Maple Leafs for two draft picks. Anaheim acquired the 30th overall pick in Friday’s draft and a second-round choice in 2017 for Andersen, who has shared the Ducks’ crease with John Gibson for parts of the past two years. The goalies combined to win the Jennings Trophy for the NHL’s lowest goalsagain­st average.

Football

Running back Kendall Gaskins has signed a twoyear contract with the 49ers. Gaskins appeared in nine games with San Francisco last season and has spent parts of the past two years on the 49ers’ practice squad. He had 16 carries for 38 yards and eight catches for 69 yards last season.

Boxing

The Internatio­nal Boxing Federation said Monday it will punish boxers who compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by removing them from the sanctionin­g body’s rankings or vacating their titles. The Internatio­nal Boxing Associatio­n (AIBA) recently decided to allow profession­al boxers to attempt to qualify for the Olympics, but no major fighters have accepted the invitation. The IBF has joined other sanctionin­g bodies, fighters and trainers in strongly condemning the plan, citing serious health risks in pitting seasoned pros against amateurs.

College baseball

Pinch-hitter Ryan Cumberland’s two-run single broke a tie, and UC Santa Barbara elimianted No. 3 seed Miami with a 5-3 victory in the College World Series. Oklahoma State beat Arizona 1-0.

Track

Jama Aden, the coach of world 1,500-meter champion Genzebe Dibaba and other long-distance runners was arrested near Barcelona on Monday after Spanish police raided his hotel room and found traces of EPO and other banned substances.
