Snedeker eagles 18th to take lead

Is single stroke up on amateur du Toit, U.S. Open champ Johnson

Brandt Snedeker overpowere­d the par-5 18th hole Saturday in the Canadian Open to take a one-stroke lead over Canadian amateur Jared du Toit and U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson in Oakville, Ontario.

Snedeker hit a 378-yard drive and 121-yard approach to set up a 71⁄2-foot eagle putt that he holed for a 6-under 66. He had five straight birdies on Nos. 2-6, bogeyed 11 and 15 and birdied the par-5 16th.

Snedeker won the 2013 tournament at Glen Abbey. The 35-year-old American won the Farmers Insurance Open in February at Torrey Pines for his eighth PGA Tour title.

Du Toit, coming off his junior season at Arizona State, made a 40-foot eagle putt on 18 for a 70.

Johnson birdied the final hole for a 71.

Charley Hull and surprising n England grabbed the lead in the UL Internatio­nal Crown in Illinois, and the United States advanced with a sweep against Japan. Hull teamed with Melissa Reid for a 3-and-1 victory over sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand. Holly Clyburn and Jodi Ewart Shadoff routed Pornanong Phatlum and Porani Chutichai 7 and 5, helping seventh-seeded England to a Pool B-best nine points.

Miguel Angel Jimenez n opened a four-stroke lead in the Senior British Open in Scotland, shooting a 7under 65 to fall one short of matching the Carnoustie Golf Links record.

MMA

Valentina Shevchenko stunned Holly Holm at UFC Chicago, unanimousl­y outpointin­g the former UFC champion. Fighting for the first fight since losing the belt to Miesha Tate at UFC 196, Holm had losing scores of 49-46 from the judges. Her stunning knockout of then-champ Ronda Rousey in Australia at UFC 193 catapulted Holm (10-2) into the spotlight of mixed martial arts, but she followed with back-to-back losses.

Boxing

Terence Crawford won both the fight and a possible ticket into the Manny Pacquiao sweepstake­s. Crawford turned in a dominating performanc­e in a battle of unbeaten champions in Las Vegas, knocking down Viktor Postol twice on his way to a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision to put himself in the running for a fight with Pacquiao in November.

Motor sports

Kyle Busch will try to defend his Brickyard 400 win from the pole Sunday. Busch posted a fast lap of 184.634 mph.

Tony Stewart will start third in his final race at Indy. Jeff Gordon will start 21st as Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s replacemen­t.

Soccer

Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes scored in the opening 11 minutes, and the L.A. Galaxy beat Portland 2-1 to snap the Timbers’ ninegame undefeated streak. … Victor Ulloa scored the tying goal and FC Dallas held on for a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids in a matchup of the top two MLS teams.

Miscellany

Police say a University of Florida football player helped stop the rape of an unconsciou­s woman behind a trash bin outside a bar. Cristian Garcia said he was taking out the trash Thursday morning from the bar where he works security when he noticed the assault. Garcia said the man’s friends were watching and did nothing to help. The incident was videotaped.

Garcia said he and another witness stopped it. Police arrested Christophe­r Shaw, 34, and charged him with sexual battery of the 19-year-old victim.

San Jose Giants

The San Jose Giants matched a season-high with 18 hits in an 8-1 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers at Municipal Stadium.

Miguel Gomez and Jonah Arenado each homered while four other San Jose players collected three hits.

Jose Reyes (3-3) earned the win after reaching season-high totals of 62⁄3 innings and seven strikeouts while allowing just one run.

The right-hander surrendere­d three hits and did not walk a batter.
