Berger shoots 62 for three-stroke lead

Logano wins Xfinity race; Edwards on pole for Sprint Cup event

Daniel Berger birdied seven of his last 10 holes Saturday for an 8-under 62 and a three-stroke lead in the Travelers Championsh­ip in Cromwell, Connecticu­t.

The 23-year-old Floridian, the PGA Tour rookie of the year last season, had just one bogey and was two strokes off the course record. He reached 15-under 195 at TPC River Highlands, following up rounds of 66 and 67 that left him tied for the lead coming into the day.

Russell Knox had a 64, and Russell Henley and Tyrone Van Aswegen each shot 65, to tie for second place at 12 under.

Miguel Angel Jimenez made a 17-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole for a 9-under 63 and the secondroun­d lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ 3M Championsh­ip in Blaine, Minnesota. Kevin Sutherland was a stroke back after a 64.

South Korea’s Eun Jeong Seong and Italy’s Virginia Elena Carta set up the first all-internatio­nal U.S. Women’s Amateur final in 106 years, both advancing with 2-and-1 victories at Rolling Green in Springfiel­d, Pennsylvan­ia.

Motor sports

Joey Logano won the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen Internatio­nal for the second straight year, leading 67 laps to dominate from the pole in the Zippo 200. Paul Menard finished second.

Carl Edwards won the pole for the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen Internatio­nal. Edwards, who also won the pole in June at NASCAR’s other road course at Sonoma, turned a fast lap of 126.562 mph to edge Kyle Larson for the top spot. .

Del Worsham broke the Funny Car elapsed-time national record twice to take the top qualifying spot in the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. Worsham had a 3.841-second pass at 330.15 mph in the first session, then topped that with a 3.832 at 330.88.

Soccer

Javier Morales had two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Nick Rimando set an MLS record for career victories in Real Salt Lake’s 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire.

Rimando moved past Kevin Hartman to become the sole leader on the career list with 181.

Sebastian Giovinco had his second three-goal game of the season to take over the MLS lead and power Toronto FC to a 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution.

Giovinco has 15 goals, two more than New York City’s David Villa.

Matteo Mancosu scored in his first MLS start to help Montreal beat Houston 1-0.

Marlon Hairston had a goal and an assist in the Colorado Rapids’ 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Steve Birnbaum scored for D.C. United in the 94th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw with the Philadelph­ia Union.

Football

The New York Jets announced that wide receiver Titus Davis has left training camp, and they claimed wide receiver Chris King off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Todd Bowles said after practice that he was told Davis was finished with football.

San Jose Giants

T.J. Bennett fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, but the host Giants couldn’t muster much more offense, falling to the Stockton Ports 9-4. Bennett had an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth, finishing 4-for-4 with two runs scored.
