Dolly Parton charms Shoreline crowd

Country music superstar showcases tiptop vocals with cuts from new album

Thirteen thousand fans screamed in approval as country music legend Dolly Parton kicked off her show on Saturday night at the Shoreline Amphitheat­re.

“What a nice welcome,” said the 70-year-old Tennessee native, as the crowd continued to roar. “Aww, listen to you. I ain’t all that.”

Yes, Dolly, you are all that — and a bag of chips.

And she certainly proved it during her highly enjoyable two-set concert in Mountain View, delighting fans with equal amounts of song, charm, humor and storytelli­ng.

She played her top hits, tried on a few covers for size, made some unexpected choices and showcased cuts from her new album, “Pure & Simple.” She excelled at nearly every turn, resulting in an evening that underscore­d why Parton ranks as one of the greatest country artists of all time.

The singer-songwriter, actress, author and highly successful businesswo­man sounded terrific — despite dealing with a case of the sniffles — as she belted out such early classics as “My Tennessee Mountain Home” and “Coat of Many Colors” in the first set.

“Pure & Simple,” released on Aug. 19, is the 43rd album by Dolly Parton. Four of the 12 songs on the album have been previously recorded by Parton.
