Truex Jr. racks up another Chase win

Stanford drops in AP poll to No. 15 after blowout loss to UW

Martin Truex Jr.’s lateseason surge extended Sunday at Dover Internatio­nal Speedway, as he earned his second victory in the first three Chase races.

Truex won for the fourth time this season and paired this Chase win with his opening victory at Chicagolan­d.

Tony Stewart finished 13th and the three-time NASCAR champion was knocked out of contention in the first eliminatio­n race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championsh­ip as the field was sliced from 16 drivers to 12.

Austin Dillon finished eighth and moved from outside the points cutoff of the Chase to a transfer spot and advanced to the next round. Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch joined Truex and Dillon in the next round.

Daniel Suarez won n the Xfinity Series delayed a day by rain to kick off 600 miles of racing. NASCAR ran its first Xfinity-Cup doublehead­er since April 25, 2010, at Talladega Superspeed­way.

College football

Stanford fell eight spots to No. 15 in the Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.

Washington, which routed the Cardinal 44-6 on Friday night, moved up to No. 5. Alabama and Ohio State remained 1-2, followed by Clemson and Michigan remained No. 4.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Houston, Louisville, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Miami.

Former San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre has Colorado (No. 21) ranked for the first time since 2005.

Soccer

Earthquake­s goalkeeper David Bingham and teammate Chris Wondolowsk­i were named to the Team USA 23-man roster for two exhibition­s, including the first meeting against Cuba since 1947. That game is Friday in Havana. The U.S. also will play host to New Zealand on Oct. 11 in Washington. Former Stanford star Jordan Morris and Cal standout Steven Birnbaum also made the U.S. roster.

Brad Evans scored n on a penalty kick in the 81st minute and the Seattle Sounders beat Vancouver 2-1 to eliminate the Whitecaps from playoff contention. The Sounders (13-135) have won four straight and are fifth in the Western Conference in the race for six playoff spots.

WNBA

The defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury 82-67, completing a threegame sweep of the semifinal series. In the other semifinal, the Sky held off the Sparks 70-66 to force a Game 4.
