Biwott, Kipyego rock on to victory

Two capture titles at Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose Half Marathon

Shadrack Biwott and Sally Kipyego won the 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose Half Marathon men’s and women’s titles, respective­ly, on Sunday.

Biwott, 31, is the brother of former champion and current course-record holder Duncan Kibet. The Mammoth Lake resident finished the 13.1-mile race through downtown San Jose in one hour, one minute, and 55 seconds.

“I felt amazing,” Biwott said. “I honestly didn’t know the pace I was running at the beginning. My first mile was 4:41 and I said that I might as well keep running like this if I can.”

Biwott, who was making his final tuneup before the New York City Marathon next month, made his move at mile 5 when he dropped eventual-second-place finisher Patrick Smyth, who finished in 1:03:21. Daniel Tapia (1:04:13) was third.

“Once I saw the (lead) truck. I chased it down. I kind of fell asleep around miles 10, 11, and 12, but then I woke up and told myself to push it.”

Kipyego, from Kenya, won the women’s race in 1:09: 53.

“It was a good day,” Kipyego said. “The conditions were perfect.”

Stanford product Sara Hall was second in 1:12:47, followed by Lyndy Dav (1:08:47).

College soccer

Stanford’s Foster Langsdorf scored for the sixth time in his past five games as the Cardinal (42-3, 1-0-0 Pac-12) started Pac-12 play with a 1-0 win over visiting Cal (4-3-1, 0-1-0) at Cagan Stadium. Langsdorf’s goal in the 47th minute.

Stanford outshot Cal 18-13 and 7-4 in attempts on goal. Bears goalie Jonathan Klinsmann had six saves for the game.

Alison Jahansouz n stopped a penalty kick and Stanford’s women’s team (10-0-1, 3-0 Pac-12) dominated play with 10 players for a majority of the match, earning a 3-0 victory against visiting Washington (5-6-1, 0-3).

A lone goal scored n early in the first half was all Pacific needed as the host Tigers beat Saint Mary’s women’s team (2-8-2, 0-1 West Coast Conference) 1-0 in both teams’ West Coast Conference opener.

Maricruz Chapa n scored two goals and San Jose State (6-3-3, 3-1-0 Mountain West) blanked visiting San Diego State (46-1, 2-1-1) 4-0.

College volleyball

Ashten Smith-Gooden had 11 kills at a .389 hitting percentage but visiting Cal (6-8, 0-4 Pac-12) fell to No. 17 Washington State 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

College golf

Led by Annie Freman, Santa Clara women’s team a tournament-record 882 to capture the team title at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercolle­giate at the 6,112-yard, par-72 Classic Club in Palm Desert. Freman shot a final-round, even-par 72 to win the event by six shots.

The San Jose State n men’s team had its best finish in nearly three years placing third at the 12-team GolfWeek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa. The Spartans finished with a two-under 862.
