Cal men fourth in Pac-12 hoops poll

Stanford picked to finished 10th; Cal’s Goransson advances

Cal was picked fourth and Stanford 10th in the Pac-12 preseason poll, which was announced Friday in connection with the conference’s annual media event in San Francisco.

Oregon was picked to repeat as conference champion in the balloting of 27 media members, receiving 23 first-place votes. Arizona was picked second.

Tennis

Cal’s Andre Goransson and former Pacific player Sem Verbeek advanced to the finals of the $25,000 Berkeley Futures USTA Pro Circuit tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Goransson also advanced to the singles semifinals with a 76(4), 6-0 win.

Volleyball

No. 14 Stanford lost 3-1 at No. 15 UCLA, the Cardinal’s first loss to the Bruins since 2011.

San Jose State rallied n for a 16-25, 14-25, 27-25, 2522, 15-11 victory over Mountain West leader Colorado State on Thursday night, snapping the Rams’ 31-game conference winning streak. Giulia Gávio led all hitters with 18 kills and recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 digs for the Spartans, who had not defeated CSU since 1998.

Women’s soccer

Brittany Ambrose scored early in the second half, but Santa Clara couldn’t overcome an early two goal deficit and lost 2-1 at No. 19 Pepperdine.

Jordan DiBiasi and n Averie Collins scored second-half goals to power No. 3 Stanford to a 2-0 win over No. 22 Colorado on Thursday night. The win moved the Cardinal (13-1-1, 6-1 Pac-12) into a three-way tie atop the Pac-12 standings with the Buffaloes (124, 6-1) and No. 5 USC (12-3, 6-1).

Swimming

Cal won 13 of 14 events to win its home opener 15597 over Washington State. Celina Li, placed first in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard breaststro­ke and 400-yard individual medley. Freshman Abbey Weitzeil won the 50 free and the two-time medalist at the Rio Olympics and the American-record holder in the 50 freestyle also anchored the opening 200 medley relay to victory and swam a leg of the winning 200 free relay.

Men’s soccer

Christian Thierjung’s ninth goal of the season was the winner as Cal rallied for a 2-1 win at No. 25 UCLA on Thursday. Jose Carerra-Garcia scored the equalizer for Cal in the 74th minute.

Bryce Marion scored n his first career goal in the second half to help No. 12 Stanford salvage a 1-1 draw at San Diego State on Thursday.
