Moore goes for 38 as Cal downs UC Irvine
Bear sets Cal freshman record; No. 17 Saint Mary’s rolls in Moraga
Charlie Moore scored 38 points to break Shareef Abdur-Rahim’s freshman record of 33 points set in November 1995, Stephen Domingo hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:10 left in overtime, and short-handed No. 25 Cal held off UC Irvine 75-65 on Wednesday night.
Kameron Rooks’ tipin with 23 seconds left in regulation tied the game and Jaron Martin failed to get off a shot for the Anteaters (1-2). Rooks scored a career-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds as Cal extended its home winning streak at Haas Pavilion to 21.
Martin scored a careerbest 26 points with three key baskets over the final 6:11 of regulation.
Cal (2-0) missed three starters because of injuries: preseason All-America Ivan Rabb (toe), Jabari Bird (back) and Columbia transfer Grant Mullins (neck strain).
Saint Mary’s 110, Prairie View A&M 72: Emmett Naar had 16 points and 11 assists to pace seven scorers in double figures and the No. 17 Gaels (2-0) beat Prairie View A&M (1-2) in Moraga.
Naar shot 7 of 9 from the field. He scored eight points in the first 5 minutes of the second half, including two 3-pointers as part of a 15-4 run.
Indiana 100, UMass-Lowell 78: James Blackmon Jr. made five 3-pointers, scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Robert Johnson added 16 points, as the No. 6 Hoosiers (2-0) sailed to a victory over the River Hawks.
Lamar 63, Oregon State 60: Colton Weisbrod had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Cardinals (2-0) forced 27 turnovers and held on to beat the host Beavers (21). Marcus Owens added 15 points and seven rebounds for Lamar.
USF 75, UC Santa Barbara 63: Ronnie Boyce had career-highs of 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Dons (2-0) over the Gauchos (0-2). The game was tied 41-41 with 12:37 left to play.
Kent State: The school’s players made their home opener memorable, and it had little to do with winning. In a sign of unity they hope catches on, the Golden Flashes invited fans onto the court to stand with them during the national anthem before the game against Mississippi Valley State.

Texas 98, Houston Baptist 46: Freshman Joyner Holmes scored 22 points to lead the No. 8 Longhorns (11) past the visiting Huskies (0-2).
