Cal hires new coordinator

DeRuyter is chosen to lead Bears defense

It’s official. Tosh Lupoi will not be returning to Cal.

New coach Justin Wilcox announced the hiring for Tim DeRuyter as the Bears’ defensive coordinator Monday. DeRuyter previously was the head coach at Fresno State, where he was fired midway through the 2016 season.

Lupoi, a former Cal assistant and player now at Alabama, and Washington co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, had been rumored as leading candidates to get the Cal job.

This means that both coordinators at Cal have head coaching experience. Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin was the coach at Eastern Washington before being lured away by Wilcox.

“Tim DeRuyter is a proven and experienced defensive coordinator with an excellent track record of success in fielding some of the nation’s best defenses,” Wilcox said in a press release. “He has great expertise and knowledge in running a defense, and it’s also a tremendous plus that he understands what it’s like to be a head coach after his recent tenure at Fresno State.”

DeRuyter, 54, was 30-30 at Fresno State and led the Bulldogs to bowl games in each of his first three seasons. But Fresno slipped to 3-9 in 2015, then DeRuyter was fired when the Bulldogs began 1-7 last season.

His overall record as a head coach is 31-30, as he led Texas A&M past Northwestern in the Meineke Car Care Bowl as the interim coach in 2011. He was in his second season as the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M when he was hired at Fresno State.

DeRuyter has spent 16 years as a defensive coordinator, with stops at Ohio, Navy, Nevada, Air Force and Texas A&M.

Cal (+-20) made the most of windy weather conditions during the opening day of the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson and was in second place four shots behind leader Oregon (+16) when action was halted due to darkness. The Bears’ four-over play during the first 12-14 holes of the second round was the best in the 18-team field and allowed Cal to shave three shots off the Ducks’ opening-round lead.
