Stanford women cruise to golf title

The No. 3 Stanford women’s golf team closed out a record-breaking week by successful­ly defending its title Tuesday in the Silverado Showdown at cool and rainy Silverado Resort.

The Cardinal closed with a 1-over 289 to finish with a program best 16-under 848 to claim a nine stroke victory over No. 5 UCLA in the 18-school tournament. It was the fourth triumph in five starts this spring, matching the season record set in 2013-14.

On Monday, all five Stanford players broke par for the first time in school history, combining for a record 12-under 276.

Four players earned top 20 finishes Tuesday, and Stanford’s highest score all week was 76.

Freshman Andrea Lee, going for her fourth win of the season, posted a 73 to complete play at 7-under 209, one shot back of Lilia Vu of UCLA and Hannah Kim of Northweste­rn.

Senior Casey Danielson tied for fourth with rounds of 69-69-73 to end at 5-under 211.

San Jose State shot a 2-over 290 in the final round and finished tied for ninth with Pepperdine at 879 (+15). My Leander was the team’s top finisher as she tied for 19th place at 1-over par 217.

Pavan Sagoo of Saint Mary’s won the Ping n Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah, defeating Loyola Marymount’s Blake Meek with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. Sagoo and Meek finished tied at 7-under. Saint Mary’s finished tied for fourth with Santa Clara at 9-under par in the three-day event. Santa Clara’s Matt McCarty and Hayden Shieh tied for third, a shot out of the playoff.

Basketball

Cal men’s coach Wyking Jones announced the hiring of assistant Chris Walker and director of operations Keith Brown. Walker has made previous stops at Texas Tech, Villanova, Pepperdine, Vanderbilt, New Mexico and UMass. Brown has worked previously at Nevada, Coppin State, Seattle and Mount St. Mary’s.

Baseball

Saint Mary’s took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batsmen to set a modern record for runs in routing Cal (15-15) 24-7 in a nonconfere­nce game at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary’s (21-11) scored five runs in the first on a grand slam by Kevin Milam and a solo home run by Edward Haus. The Gaels were off and running. Saint Mary’s coach Eric Valenzuela played under Bears coach David Esquer at Pepperdine. Joe Vranesh and Jackson Thoreson also homered for the Gaels.

A five-run second inning sparked No. 18 n Stanford (18-10) to a 9-3 win over host San Jose State at Municipal Stadium.

San Jose Giants

Ryan Howard’s two-out two-run homer in the seventh put San Jose in front to stay in a 10-5 Giants victory at Lancaster.
