WEDNESDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Dodgers 2, Cubs 0: Brandon McCarthy pitched four-hit ball over six innings and Andrew Toles hit his first leadoff homer on the day the Cubs received their championship rings. Chicago put the finishing touches on a celebration that started when they beat Cleveland in Game 7 last November to win the World Series for the first time since 1908. They raised the banner Monday night and got 14-karat white gold rings with a total of 214 diamonds in a ceremony Wednesday that drew more roars from the fans at Wrigley Field. But once the game started, there wasn’t much to cheer for Cubs fans. Rangers 8, Angels 3: Joey Gallo hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the fifth to prevent a third straight late-inning comeback by the Angels. Brewers 2, Blue Jays 0: Chase Anderson and two relievers combined on a fourhitter to hand the struggling Blue Jays their fifth straight loss. Toronto is off to the worst start in team history at 1-7. Marcus Stroman pitched a complete game for Toronto. Cardinals 6, Nationals 1: Mike Leake outpitched 2016 NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, Stephen Piscotty homered and had five RBIs, and St. Louis avoided a three-game sweep. The five RBIs tied a career high for the Stanford product. Padres 6, Rockies 0: Zach Lee and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, and Ryan Schimpf homered as part of a four-run first inning. Lee (1-0) earned his first major league win in his second career start. The other one came on July 25, 2015, with the Dodgers. Orioles 12, Red Sox 5: Trey Mancini hit two of Baltimore’s five home runs. Astros 10, Mariners 5: Jose Altuve hit three singles and drew two walks, helping Houston overcome an early five-run deficit. Braves 5, Marlins 4: Ender Inciarte hit two home runs and Tyler Flowers had a go-ahead single in the ninth inning to help Atlanta break a fivegame losing streak. Giancarlo Stanton hit a pair of two-run homers for the Marlins, his first of the year. White Sox 2, Indians 1: Derek Holland held Cleveland hitless until Francisco Lindor doubled to lead off the sixth inning, and late fill-in Matt Davidson had a two-run single to lead Chicago. Holland is 4-0 with a 1.02 ERA in five career starts at Progressive Field. Mets 5, Phillies 4: Former Giants prospect Zack Wheeler earned his first win in 21⁄2 years to help New York complete a three-game sweep. Wheeler left with a shutout intact but was charged with three runs and four hits over 52⁄3 innings. The right-hander missed the last two seasons following Tommy John surgery and had not won since Sept. 19, 2014, against Atlanta.

The Phillies said an MRI exam revealed right-hander Clay Buchholz suffered a partial tear of his right flexor pronator mass, which connects the forearm to the elbow, and he could miss the rest of the season. Reds 9, Pirates 2: Rookie Amir Garrett, the former St. John’s basketball player, took a shutout into the seventh inning as Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep. Garrett gave up five hits, walked none and struck out five in 62⁄3 innings. In his major league debut last week, the 24-yearold lefty pitched six scoreless innings to win at St. Louis.
