Top-seeded Sock leads three Americans into clay court semifinals
Roddy White, the leading receiver in Atlanta Falcons history, has officially retired.
White has announced his retirement on his Twitter account. White, who was released by Atlanta before the 2016 season, thanked team owner Arthur Blank and the Falcons “for a great 11 years.”
He also expressed his thanks to Atlanta by adding “I love y’all so much” in Friday’s Twitter post.
White, 35, is the Falcons’ career leader in receptions, yards receiving and touchdown catches. He did not land with another team after being cut by Atlanta.
The Falcons drafted White from Alabama-Birmingham in the first round of the 2005 draft. He was a first team All-Pro in 2010, when he led the league with 115 catches. He was a fourtime Pro Bowl selection.
Texans offensive lineman David Quessenberry was so happy to finish chemotherapy at a Houston medical center that he exuberantly rang an end-ofcancer-treatment bell and broke it. Quessenberry, who in 2014 was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, had his last treatment Tuesday at the University of Texas MD Anderson Center. The 300-pound Quessenberry, in a video posted to his Instagram account, is shown ringing the bell with such enthusiasm that he yanked it off the wall — with medical personnel cheering him on. Quessenberry, who played for San Jose State, was a sixth-round pick in 2013 for the Texans.
Washington linebacker Trent Murphy has been suspended the first four games of next season for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy. .
Cornerback Nick Marshall of the New York Jets has been suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2017 regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.
Golf
Graham DeLaet eagled the par-4 ninth hole and shot a 4-under 67 for a share of the second-round lead with Luke Donald in the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Donald also had a 67 to match DeLaet at 10-under 132, two ahead of Ian Poulter and Webb Simpson.
Bob Tway bogeyed two of the last three holes for a 7-under 65 and the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Mitsubishi Electric Classic in Duluth, Georgia. David Frost was second after a bogeyfree 66. Su-Yeon Jang took Lotte Championship lead in the completion of the third round and opened a three-stroke cushion in the afternoon with a third-round 7-under 65 in Kapolei, Hawaii. The 22-year-old sponsor invite from South Korea had a 17-under 199 total. She completed her second straight 67 in the morning in the rain-delayed event.
Tennis
Top-seeded Jack Sock led three Americans into the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship semifinals, beating sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4 in Houston. Sock will face fourth-seeded countryman Steve Johnson, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over fifthseeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Johnson won his lone tour title last year on grass at Nottingham in England.
Ernesto Escobedo outlasted second-seeded John Isner 7-6 (6), 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) in an all-American match. Escobedo will face eighthseeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 winner over third-seeded Sam Querrey of the U.S.
