ARGENTINA: Mary Jo and Jim Colton of Palo Alto traveled to Patagonia with five other couples from their neighborhood. A highlight of the trip, Jim says, was Los Glaciares National Park in the Austral Andes of Argentina. “We saw icebergs calving from the wall of the glacier 140 feet above the water’s surface.” Travel tips: “Temperature varies significantly throughout the area, so wear layers and bring a rainproof jacket. Good hiking shoes are a must. Be prepared for some good food and drink.”
CANARY ISLANDS: Hollister residents Sally and Jack Biersdorff took a Celebrity transition cruise from Rome to Miami, with a stop on the island of Tenerife, which is part of the Spanish-ruled Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, after sailing through the Straits of Gibraltar. The cruise included eight days on the Mediterranean and then eight more for the Tenerife-Miami crossing. Teide National Park, a UNESCO site, was among the highlights on their Tenerife tour, Sally says. “Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, had a dusting of snow on its volcanic slopes. A visit to the pyramids of Guimar was fascinating, as well.”
Travel tips: “Transition cruises offer great deals — including airfare — at the beginning or end of the summer season. Take the Teide National Park tour or the Tenerife Island tour. The Atlantic is a great cruise with any of the big cruise ships that have stabilizers.” Eating a little crystallized ginger each day, Sally says, helped ward off seasickness.
