Camino turns Kebab Mondays into new eatery
Skewered by success: Kebab Mondays were just too popular to contain to Camino one night a week.
So Oakland restaurateurs Russell Moore and Allison Hopelain and new partner Brian Crookes have spun off the concept to a new globally influenced eatery, The Kebabery, which is now open for dinner in the Longfellow neighborhood.
It’s an all-organic affair, with chef Traci Matsumoto-Esteban (Camino, Terra) grilling Herby Lamb Kebabs, fenugreek-seasoned Marinated Chicken Kebabs, Spiced King Trumpet Mushroom Kebabs — all with house-pickled chiles, minted yogurt and Moore’s signature flatbread. Sides include mashed beets, sauerkraut salad and spiced carrots.
The Kebabery is open 5-9 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday at 4201 Market St.; www.thekebaberyoakland.com. Your vote counts: Want to have a say in the next restaurant to move into Eastridge
Center? Head over May 13 to the “Taste for the Space,” a culinary competition that will determine which local chef, restaurateur or food truck will win an eatery space at the San
Jose mall. Will it be chicken wings, cupcakes, fish tacos, Italian ice — or something else? You get to vote after tasting samples from the 13 competitors: Crazy Poke, Sazon Peruana, Big Ed’s Buzzard BBQ, Fairy Cakes, Rita’s, Baca Sauces, Tea Lyfe, Wings-N-Things, Big E Cafe, Fish Taco Wabo, Trifecta Cooks, West Wing
and FK Frozen Custard. The winning vendor gets a fully equipped eatery space, six months’ free rent and $50,000 in investment dough.
It’s free to participate. You’ll be voting via cellphone, so register at http://eastridgecenter.com/tasteforthespace/either in advance or at the event, which starts at 1 p.m.
Coming to the Creek: The fresh-seafood restaurant chain
Pacific Catch — think seafood tacos, fresh fish platters — is expanding again in the East Bay. The San Francisco-based company has announced it will move into downtown Walnut
Creek later this year. The restaurant at 1305 S. Main St. at South Broadway Plaza will be the company’s eighth, after the Dublin one at Persimmon Place. Follow the progress at www.pacificcatch.com.
Dine for a cause: More than 40 Peninsula restaurants will donate 10 percent of dinner proceeds May 9 to “Dine Out for Meals on Wheels.” The effort, coordinated by Peninsula Volunteers Inc., features chef-driven restaurants such as Jesse Cool’s Flea Street
Cafe (in Menlo Park, Manuel Martinez’s LV Mar and La
Viga in Redwood City, Donato Scotti’s Donato Enoteca in Redwood City, as well as casual favorites, including three Amici’s pizzerias and six Celia’s Mexican Restaurant locations. Find the full list of participating eateries at www.penvol.org/dineout/.
