Heat advisory issued for Bay Area through Monday

The mercury is expected to climb into the triple digits in parts of the Bay Area this weekend and it will be uncomfortably warm well into next week, according to the National Weather Service in Monterey.

As a result, the weather service has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 p.m. Monday.

A ridge of high pressure centered over Southern California is to blame for temperatures that will be 10 to 20 degrees above normal, said Will Pi, a meteorologist with the weather service.

Temperatures started to rise Friday. As of about 4 p.m., San Jose had recorded a high of 88 degrees, Oakland 79 degrees and downtown San Francisco 73 degrees, Pi said.

Concord and Livermore were the hottest spots at 97 and 93 degrees, respectively, Pi said.

The weekend forecast calls for low 90s in San Jose, mid 80s in Oakland and low 80s in downtown San Francisco. Sunday will be the warmest day, with Concord, Livermore and Santa Rosa expected to see temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, Pi said.

Parts of Santa Clara Valley, including Morgan Hill and Gilroy, also could approach the triple-digit mark.

“Maybe wait until evening to do something,” Pi said about those with Father’s Day plans.

More of the same is in the cards next week, though a sea breeze could cool things off by a degree or two.

“If there’s any cooling, it will be very slight,” said Pi.

Among other actions, the weather service is advising Bay Area residents to drink plenty of fluids and to avoid physical activity between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. while the heat advisory is in effect.

Cities including Santa Clara and Morgan Hill also are planning to open cooling centers.

As warm as it’s expected to be, Pi said he doesn’t believe any heat records to fall over the next week or so. Contact Jason Green at 408-920-5006.
