Johnson to keep his foot on the gas with three-year extension

-

Fresh off another championship — and with three more victories already this season — Jimmie Johnson is showing no signs of slowing down.

Now, he’s ready for at least three more years of racing. Beyond that, Johnson is leaving his options open.

Johnson agreed to a three-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports through 2020. Hendrick announced the deal with the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Friday.

“I’ve said it before and continued to say that when the fire does go out, I will step down,” said Johnson, who is preparing for this weekend’s race at Michigan International Speedway. “I don’t have any framework now on a timeline.

“I just know that I’ve got three more years of trying to go out there and win championships and win races. I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been and as focused and dedicated on doing my job.”

Hendrick already lost Jeff Gordon, who announced his retirement two years ago, and now Dale Earnhardt Jr. is in his final season. Johnson, however, won the title last year at age 41 and has no interest in stepping aside.

College baseball

Oregon State already can make a case for ranking among the greatest college baseball teams of all time. If the Beavers win the national championship at the College World Series, there will be no argument. At 54-4, the Beavers have the fewest losses of any team entering the CWS since Texas came in 57-4 in 1982. They take a 21-game winning streak into their game against Cal State Fullerton (39-22) on Saturday.

Henderson had seven birdies and three bogeys to reach 12-under 130 and break the 36-hole record at Blythefield. Lexi Thompson shot a 68 to join Carlota Ciganda (64) and Mi Jung Hur (66) at 10 under.

It appears that Markelle Fultz could be in play for the 76ers. The Sixers are in talks to send the third overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft and a future first-rounder to the Boston Celtics in exchange for the Celtics’ first overall pick, according to the Vertical. The Sixers will have two firstrounders next season, their own and an unprotected one from the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers pick has been part of the discussion with Boston, according to the report. The trade would enable the Sixers to draft Fultz,
