Ledecky swims to fifth gold medal at worlds
Stanford’s Katie Ledecky made it five gold medals in her final event of the world championships, cruising to victory in the 800-meter freestyle Saturday in Budapest, Hungary.
Ledecky wasn’t seriously challenged but finished far off her world record with a time of 8 minutes, 12.68 seconds. She won gold at last year’s Olympics in 8:04.79.
Ledecky finishes worlds with five golds and a silver.
• Caeleb Dressel became the first swimmer to win three gold medals on a single night at the world championships. America’s newest star turned in a stunning performance, racing three times over the course of about two hours and winning every time.
He started with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle, came back about a halfhour later to nearly break Michael Phelps’ world record in the 100 butterfly and closed the night by leading off a world-record performance in the mixed 4x100 free relay. That team included Stanford’s Simone Manuel and Cal’s Nathan Adrian.
That gave Dressel, a University of Florida student, six gold medals in the championships, putting him in position to tie Phelps’ record of seven golds at the 2007 worlds in Melbourne, Australia.
“The comparisons are probably inevitable,” Dressel said. “But I’m not the same person as Michael.”
• Cal’s Kathleen Baker took bronze in the 200 backstroke, her first time competing in this event on the international stage.
• Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom set a world mark (23.67) in the 50 free, and Manuel took bronze (24.12).
• Cal graduate Farida Osman earned the first medal at the world championships for Egypt. She took bronze in the 50 butterfly (25.39).
• Croatia ended host nation Hungary’s hopes of a fourth world title in men’s water polo with an 8-6 victory in the final.
