Bucket list now shorter for Pirates’ McCutchen

-

Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen smacked his first career grand slam as part of an eight-RBI game in a 10-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

The five-time All Star and 2013 National League MVP had 5,016 major-league atbats coming into the game and 201 home runs, but had never hit one with the bases load until he connected with Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman’s 2-1 offering in the second inning.

“He’s been very transparent about the fact that it’s on his bucket list,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “He was able to wipe that off the list tonight. His facial expression on the trip around the bases said it all.” PHILLIES WON’T SEE CENTURY MARK >> The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 on a meaningful night for a team near the end of a meaningless season.

The win ensures that Philadelphia (63-95) will not lose 100 games; the Phillies haven’t hit the century mark since 1961, when they lost 107 of 154 games.

On the other side of the field, with the loss, Washington locked itself into the second seed in the NL playoffs behind the Dodgers. The Nationals will host the NL Central champ — either the Cubs or Brewers beginning Oct. 6.

NOT FOR SALE >> Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale seems headed in the wrong direction at the wrong time.

Sale matched a career worst by giving up four home runs in a playoff tuneup, including a pair to Josh Donaldson, as the Red Sox lost 9-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the third time in five starts he’s surrendered multiple homers in a game.
