Stanford’s Ledecky helps Pac-12 squad defeat Team USA
Five Stanford swimmers — Katie Drabot, Katie Ledecky, Janet Hu, Brooke Forde and Ella Eastin — led the Pac-12 over Team USA 326.5286.5, in the second annual College Swimming Challenge in Los Angeles over the weekend.
In a two-day, season-opening meet that matched the USA national team against current student-athletes in the Pac-12, Ledecky swept the 200, 500 and 1,000-yard freestyles. Eastin swept the individual medleys and won the 200 butterfly.
Stanford’s Ledecky (4:28.75) and Drabot (4:37.51) were first and third in the 500 free. Ledecky also started the year with a fast finish of 9:11.68 in the 1,000 and posted a 1:41.60 in the 200.
Eastin and Forde finished 1-2, respectively, in the 400 individual medley. Eastin clocked a 4:00.02, while Forde opened her collegiate career with a 4:02.02.
Eastin bested the field in the 200 fly with a finish of 1:52.83, and in the 200 medley relay, the Stanford junior tied Cal standout Kathleen Baker — both were timed at 1:53.24.
The unique meet format also paired Stanford swimmers alongside rival Cal. The two schools comprised the entire 800 free relay. Eastin and Ledecky took the final two swims and helped the Pac12 to a win of 6:57.98.
Senior Janet Hu, who was third in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, was also part of the winning 200 mixed medley relay, and joined Ledecky on the winning 400 free relay team (3:11.68).
Stanford’s Greg Meehan was cohead coach for the Pac-12, and former Cardinal Lia Neal competed for Team USA. Neal, a 26-time AllAmerican at Stanford, was part of the national team’s win in the 400 medley relay, and finished second in the 100 free. CARDINAL MEN HELP PAC-12 PREVAIL >> Matt Anderson, Abrahm DeVine, Sam Perry, Grant Shoults and True Sweetser helped the Pac12 All-Stars defeat Team USA this weekend at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

Sunday, True Sweetser (8:59.78) placed fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle with Shoults (9:11.62) in sixth. Matt Anderson (53.42) logged a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Sam Perry (19.89) took third in the 50-yard freestyle.
Abrahm DeVine (1:44.02) had a runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Perry and the Pac12 team wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 free relay.

SAN JOSE STATE WOMEN CLINCH
REGULAR-SEASON TITLE >> The San Jose State women’s team beat Air Force 3-1 to clinch the Mountain West regular season title for the first time in program history.
It is San Jose State’s first regularseason championship since joining the Mountain West before the 2013 season, and only the third such title in program history. The Spartans were Western Athletic Conference regular season champions in 2009 and 2010.
As the 2017 regular season champions, the Spartans earn the right to host the 2018 Mountain West Championship Tournament.
The Spartans (11-5-1, 8-1-1) and Falcons (7-7-3, 4-3-3) were scoreless in the first half, but the second half was action-packed with a combined four goals and 17 shots.
Darriell Franklin got San Jose State on the board first with her header inside the left post in the 57th minute.
After the Falcons tied it, Jamilecxth Becerra’s goal put SJSU back in front. Becerra struck again in the 76th minute for the game’s final score. STANFORD WINS 13TH IN A ROW >> Top-ranked Stanford (15-1-0 overall, 8-0-0 Pac-12) won its 13th game in a row, defeating Oregon State (49-3, 1-6-1) 6-0 at Stanford’s Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Civana Kuhlmann scored twice, and Catarina Macario added two assists and one goal. Kyra Carusa and Michelle Xiao also scored, and Lauren Rood made three saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season.
CAL BLANKS OREGON >> Sixteenthranked Cal beat Oregon 3-0 in the Bears’ (13-2-1, 6-1-1 Pac-12) final home match of the regular season. Cal’s Abi Kim, Miranda Nild, and Mia Corbin all scored. Emily Boyd recorded her 36th career shutout. SPARTAN MEN WIN THIRD STRAIGHT >> The San Jose State men’s team won its third consecutive match in eight days, posting a 1-0 win over University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in a WAC contest. Andrew Mendoza scored for SJSU (5-9-1, 3-3-1) in the 72nd minute.

SOLID START FOR CAL >> Cal (287, -1) is off to a strong start at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Florida, in fourth place after the opening round. The Bears are eight strokes behind first-round leader Illinois (279, -9).
CARDINAL PLACES SIXTH >> No. 14 Stanford placed sixth at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate at the tournament namesake’s Lakeside Course in Alpharetta. The Cardinal finished the three-day, 54hole event at 16-under (285-281282). No. 3 Oklahoma State (-27) won the event.
Volleyball
CAL FALLS TO WASHINGTON >> The Cal women’s team pushed No. 14 Washington to the limit in the first two sets before finally falling 26-24, 26-24, 25-17 at Haas Pavilion. Senior Antzela Dempi led the Bears with 11 kills.
Field hockey
STANFORD BLANKS CAL >> Kristina Bassi had a hat trick and No. 17 Stanford defeated rival Cal 4-0 in America East action.
