Volleyball team thumps Texas to win regional
Kathryn Plummer was named the most outstanding player of the Stanford Regional, leading the third-seeded Cardinal women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of No. 6 seed Texas on Saturday and a berth in the Final Four. Stanford (30-3) advances to its 21st national semifinal and is making back-toback appearances in the Final Four for the first time since the Cardinal went to three straight from 200608.
Stanford will face No. 2 seed Florida in the national semifinal on Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cardinal and Gators will meet at 6 p.m. (ESPN), following top-seeded Penn State and No. 5 Nebraska.
Plummer had 19 kills to help Stanford snap Texas’ 21-match winning streak.

Stanford (18-2-2) faces Indiana (18-0-6) today (10 a.m., ESPN2) at Talen Energy Stadium just outside Philadelphia. The Cardinal, two-time defending champions, has a chance to be the second school to win three straight College Cups. Stanford owns an active postseason shutout streak of an NCAA-record 11 consecutive games.

Sophomore Destiny Longmire became the first San Jose State University women’s track and field competitor to surpass the 6.00-meter threshold in the long jump with a winning mark of 6.05 meters at the seasonopening Jackson’s Open meet in Nampa, Idaho. Longmire exceeded her previous school record of 5.98 meters. Longmire had one of five San Jose State first-place finishes, the most by any of the eight schools at the Jackson’s Open. Other winners were Brittany Brown (60-meter hurdles and triple jump), Sarahvaughn King (200 meters) and Devyn Weisenberger (high jump).
