U.S. hockey juniors edge Finland, finish second in group stage
Adam Fox scored with 1:20 left in the third period to give the United States a 5-4 victory over Finland on Sunday in the Amercans’ final preliminary-round game in the world junior hockey championship in Buffalo, New York.
The defending champion Americans (3-1) finished second behind Canada in the Group B standings and will face Russia in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
Fox also had two assists, Joey Anderson scored twice, Casey Mittelstadt had a goal and an assist on Fox’s winning goal, Brady Tkachuk added three assists, and Joseph Woll stopped 20 shots.
Canada (3-1) secured the top seed in Group A because of the point earned in its 4-3 shootout loss to the U.S. at the Buffalo Bills’ New Era Field on Friday. Canada will meet Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
Mittelstadt, the University of Minnesota freshman and most recent first-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, leads the tournament in points (eight) and is tied for the lead in goals (four).

BARKLEY TO ENTER NFL >> Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is entering the NFL draft. Barkley ran for 1,271 yards and 18 touchdowns this season and had 54 catches for 632 yards and three TDs. He also completed two passes one for a score and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.
On Saturday, he ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns and caught seven passes for 38 yards in the No. 9 Nittany Lions’ 35-28 victory over No. 12 Washington in the Fiesta Bowl.

STOSUR OUSTED >> Australian Samantha Stosur’s year ended on a sour note after she was bundled out of her home state tournament by Brisbane International seventh seed Anastasija Sevastova. The former US Open champion and French open finalist had opportunities against her 27-yearold Latvian opponent in the first set, but was completely outplayed by Sevastova in the second set to be eliminated 6-1 6-3 in the first round.
Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Andy Murray continued his return from a hip injury with a practice session as he prepares for his first competitive match since July.
Winter sports
SKI JUMPING >> Former World champion Sarah Hendrickson and Michael Glasder clinched spots in the Pyeongchang Games as the overall winners at the U.S. Olympic trials for ski jumping in Park City, Utah. Hendrickson was the women’s winner with 263.4 total points after two jumps. She took the lead following a first jump where she covered 97.5 meters at 91.0 kph.
It is the second trip to the Olympics for Hendrickson. She qualified for Sochi in 2014 but finished 21st overall after suffering a major knee injury in a training accident before the games. Glasder qualified for his first Olympics after missing the cut in 2010 and 2014. He claimed the men’s title with 270 points after two jumps. ’Bama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick is the nation’s top defender. Quarterback Kelly Bryant fuels Clemson’s offense.
